Federal law requires General Motors to label certain body parts of the vehicle with the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The purpose of the law is to reduce the number of motor vehicle thefts by helping to trace and recover parts from stolen vehicles.

The VIN labels are permanently affixed to an interior surface of the body part. The label on a replacement part contains the letter R, the manufacturer's logo, and the DOT symbol.
