Spark Plug Wiring And Boots

Notice: Twist the spark plug boot one-half turn in order to release the boot. Pull on the spark plug boot only. Do not pull on the spark plug wire or the wire could be damaged.

Notice: If the boot to wire movement has occurred, the boot will give a false visual impression of being fully seated. Ensure that the boots have been properly assembled by pushing sideways on the installed boots. Failure to properly seat the terminal onto the spark plug will lead to wire core erosion and result in an engine misfire or crossfire condition, and possible internal damage to the engine.

Service Precautions

    • When removing the boot, do not use pliers or other tools that could tear the boot.
    • Do not force anything between the wire and the boot.
    • Do force anything through the silicon jacket of the wiring.
    • During installation of the boot, make sure the metal terminal with the boot is fully seated on the spark plug terminal.
    • During installation of the boot, make sure the boot has not moved on the wire.

Correctly installed boots will be stiff. You will note only slight looseness. If the terminal has not been properly seated on the spark plug, only the resistance of the boot will be felt pushing sideways.

Spark Plug Wire Replacement

Keep spark plug wire routings intact during installation. Follow the exact wire routings when wires have been disconnected or when replacement of the wires is necessary. Failure to properly route the spark plug wires can lead to radio noise and cross-firings of the spark plugs, or shorting of the leads to ground. For the correct routing of the wires, refer to Ignition System Description .
