Tools Required

Important: Lubricate all components during assembly with Synchromesh Transmission Fluid Friction Modified GM P/N 12377916 (Canadian P/N 10953509) or equivalent.

1. Install the reverse gear onto the output end of the mainshaft.

Important: The reverse synchronizer blocking ring should have been marked for identification during disassembly. Ensure the reverse blocking ring being installed is the correct blocking ring. The 1st gear and 5th gear blocking rings look the same, but are not interchangeable with the reverse blocker ring.

2. Install the reverse gear synchronizer blocking ring.




Important: The groove on the outer diameter of the synchronizer sleeve faces toward the 5th gear.

3. Install the synchronizer assembly with the groove toward 5th gear on the mainshaft.
4. Using the J 44339  (1), complete the installation of the 5th/reverse synchronizer assembly. Ensure the synchronizer hub is seated completely on the mainshaft.



5. Install a new retainer ring for the 5th/reverse synchronizer assembly. Ensure the retainer ring is completely installed.
6. Install the 5th gear synchronizer blocking ring.
7. Install the 5th gear.



8. Using the J 44340  (1), install the rear bearing on the mainshaft . Ensure the bearing is completely installed on the mainshaft.



9. Install the rear bearing retainer ring to the mainshaft.



10. Using the J 44340 , install the speed sensor reluctor wheel on the mainshaft 5 cm (2.0 in) from the rear bearing.



11. Install the 1st gear onto the input end of the mainshaft.
12. Install the 1st gear synchronizer inner ring.
13. Install the 1st gear synchronizer middle ring.
14. Install the 1st gear synchronizer blocking ring.

Important: The groove on the outer diameter of the synchronizer sleeve faces toward the 1st gear.

15. Install the 1st/2nd gear synchronizer assembly with the scribed marks aligned.
16. Align the synchronizer rings with the keys on the 1st/2nd gear synchronizer hub. One synchronizer ring set should be on each side of the synchronizer assembly.
17. Install the synchronizer assembly retainer ring with the yellow mark.

Ensure the retainer ring is installed into the retainer ring slot around the mainshaft.




18. Install the 2nd gear synchronizer blocking ring.
19. Install the 2nd gear synchronizer middle ring.
20. Install the 2nd gear synchronizer inner ring.
21. Install the 2nd gear.



22. Install the 2nd/3rd thrust washer and lock pin.
23. Install the 2nd/3rd thrust washer retaining ring.



24. Install the 3rd gear.
25. Install the 3rd gear synchronizer blocking ring.
26. Install the 3rd/4th gear synchronizer.
27. Install the 4th gear synchronizer blocking ring.
28. Align the synchronizer blocking rings with the keys on the 3rd/4th gear synchronizer.
29. Install a new retainer ring for the 3rd/4th synchronizer assembly. Ensure the retainer ring is completely installed.
