CAMPAIGN: ISUZU COOLING FAN ADAPTER PLATE REPLACEMENT

Models: 1989-90 W4S042 GMC Forward with Automatic Transmission

TO: ALL GENERAL MOTORS DEALERS

General Motors of Canada has learned of a safety defect which exists in some 1989-90 W4, and W4 stripped chassis vehicles. Damage to the radiator and fan guides may occur as a result of cracks developed in the cooling fan clutch adaptor plate which connects the cooling fan and the fan pulley. These cracks cause the cooling fan to loosen and in some instances separate from the fan pulley mounting area while the engine is running.

If this separation occurs there may be damage to the radiator and shroud assembly. In addition, if a person is working on the vehicle in the vicinity of the engine fan blade when this occurs, personal injury can be caused by the fan blade segment.

To correct this condition, the adaptor plate (drawn type) must be removed and replaced with a circular adaptor plate.

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

Involved are certain 1989-90 W4, and W4 stripped chassis vehicles built within the following VIN breakpoints:

All affected vehicles have been identified by the VIN listing provided to involved dealers with this bulletin. Any dealer not receiving a listing was not shipped any of the affected vehicles.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY:

Dealers are to perform this campaign on all involved vehicles at no charge to owners, regardless of kilometres traveled, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service, you are to ensure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

CAMPAIGN PROCEDURE:

Refer to Section 4 of the Service Policies and Procedures Manual for the detailed procedure on handling Product Campaigns. Dealers are requested to complete the campaign on all transfers as soon as possible.

OWNER NOTIFICATION:

All owners of record at the time of campaign release are shown on the attached computer listing and have been notified by first class mail from General Motors. The listings provided are for campaign activity only and should not be used for any other purpose.

PARTS INFORMATION:

Parts required to complete this campaign should be ordered through regular channels, as follows:

PARTS AND LABOUR CLAIM INFORMATION:

Credit for the campaign work performed will be paid upon receipt of a properly completed campaign claim card, RAPID terminal or DCS transmission in accordance with the following:

Time allowance includes 0.1 hour for dealer administrative detail associated with this campaign. Parts credit will be based on dealer net plus 30% to cover parts handling.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

CAUTION:

KEEP HANDS AND CLOTHING CLEAR OF MOVING FAN BLADES. (FAN MAY TURN WHEN THE ENGINE IS OFF.) BLADES ARE EXPOSED AND CAN CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY.

REMOVAL:

1. Tilt the cab. Make sure safety lock pin is inserted in cab support bracket. 2. Disconnect battery negative cable. 3. Check the wheels.

NOTE: To complete the following operation, it is not necessary that the fan belt be loosened at the alternator.

4. Remove fan attaching bolts from the cross type bracket (See Figures 2,3). A. If some of the attaching bolts are difficult to reach, rotate the pulley by using one of the mounting bolts (See Figure 3).

CAUTION:

BE CAREFUL WHEN ROTATING THE FAN.

5. Place the removed fan inside the fan shroud. Be careful not to damage radiator fins.

NOTE: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE FAN COMPLETELY AWAY FROM THE ENGINE SHROUD AREA. THE FAN CAN BE REMOVED FROM THE ADAPTOR PLATE EVEN WHEN THE FAN ASSEMBLY IS INSIDE THE SHROUD AREA.

6. Remove the cooling fan adaptor plate from the fan pulley. 7. Remove adaptor plate and be careful not to dislodge the fan pulley.

INSTALL NEW ADAPTOR PLATE: (See Figure 3) ------------------------------------------ 1. Install new bolts to fan pulley, Part Number 94001529 (Seq. 1). 2. Torque to 13.7 - 23.5 N.m (10 - 17 ft. lbs.). 3. Mount fan assembly to adaptor plate. 4. Install new bolts (Part Number 94001529) to fan bracket (Seq. 2). 5. Torque to 13.7 - 23.5 N.m (10 - 17 ft. lbs.). 6. Install "Campaign Identification Label." 7. Remove safety pin in cab support bracket. 8. Close cab. 9. Connect negative battery cable. 10. Remove wheel chocks.

INSTALLATION OF CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL: Refer to Figure 1.
