Info - Release of New 41-MT Heavy Duty Starter Motors (RPO K67)

New 41-MT starter motors (RPO K67), which feature a more robust starter drive, have been released and are available as a service replacement for conditions involving numerous restarts or mis-engagement of the starter motor. If a condition involves a high number of restarts per day or a mis-engagement of the starter motor to the flywheel ring gear (mainly occurring in severe duty cycle environments where numerous starter engagements are required), this RPO K67 starter motor may be ordered as a replacement.

This change became effective in production approximately August 5, 1999 with the VIN breakpoints listed below.

Use the parts information listed below. Refer to the 37-MT starter motor replacement procedures in the Engine Electrical subsection of the Service Manual. A thin-wall socket may be necessary when installing the 41-MT starter.

Important: 41-MT starter motors, released with RPO K67, are positive engagement type starters. When you attempt to start the engine, the starter pinion may contact the flywheel ring gear without turning. This is considered normal. The ignition key must then be released. This will cause the starter pinion to index. Attempt to start the engine again.
