This PI was superceded to include info about possible dealer debit due to turbo disassembly. Please discard PIP3224A.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

A dealer may have the need to replace a 6.6L Duramax Diesel Engine Turbocharger. All old turbochargers will be returned to the Warranty Parts Center (WPC) for inspection. Returned turbos will be inspected by engineering for root cause failure.

Recommendation/Instructions:

The WPC has received Turbochargers from dealers that have either been disassembled, or poorly re-packaged causing shipping damage. If a turbo is replaced, do not disassemble the turbo, and verify it is re-packaged correctly before returning it. Be sure to re-package the turbo in the original shipping container with the upper and lower packaging locators installed correctly.

If the WPC has received a damaged or disassembled turbo, the repair claim may be debited back to the dealer.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
