Tools Required

J 41364-A Park/Neutral Switch Aligner

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the external wiring harness from the PNP switch (5).
  2. Disconnect the shift linkage/cable from the shift lever at the transmission.

  3. Object Number: 658996 Size: SH
  4. Use a wrench (1) to keep the shift lever (2) from rotating. Remove the nut (3) from the end of the selector shaft (4). Carefully remove the shift lever (2) from the selector shaft (4).
  5. Loosen the two bolts (6) so that the PNP switch may be rotated with some effort.
  6. Put the selector shaft in the N (Neutral) position as follows:
  7. 5.1. Place a wrench on the selector shaft flats and rotate the shaft to its furthest clockwise position.
5.2.  Rotate the selector shaft counter-clockwise two detents.

    Object Number: 659291 Size: SH
  8. Remove the splash shield.
  9. Position J 41364-A over the selector shaft (3) so the two tabs on the tool engage the two slots in the PNP switch (2) just outside the selector shaft. Rotate the PNP switch (2) until the single tab (1) at the other end of the tool engages the single slot at the top of the PNP switch.
  10. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  11. Hold the special tool in engagement with the PNP switch to maintain alignment of the PNP switch with the selector shaft.
  12. Tighten
Tighten the two bolts (4) to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

    Object Number: 658998 Size: SH
  13. Re-install the splash shield.
  14. Notice:

       • DO NOT drive the selector lever onto the selector shaft.
       • DO NOT use an impact wrench in order to tighten the selector lever nut. Hold the lever with a wrench while tightening the nut.
       • Failure to follow these instructions may result in transmission damage.

  15. Reinstall shift lever (2). Install nut (3), by hand, on the end of selector shaft (4). Use a wrench (1) to keep the shift lever from rotating.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten nut (3) to 24 N·m (18 lb ft).

  17. Reconnect the shift selector linkage/cable to the shift lever (2).
  18. Connect the external wiring harness connector to the PNP switch.
