STABILIZER BAR LINK NUT COMES LOOSE OR IS LOST (REPLACEMENT)

SUBJECT: STABILIZER BAR LINK NUT COMES LOOSE OR IS LOST (REPLACE WITH NEW STABILIZER BAR LINK WITH URETHANE GROMMETS)

MODELS: 1992 K1, 2, 3 TRUCKS

The stabilizer bar link on some 1992 K1, K2, and K3 trucks may come loose or be missing. The condition is caused by the santoprene grommets used on the 1992 K model stabilizer bar links. The santoprene grommets, which are used to isolate the link bolts from the lower control arm, may cause a low clamp load of the free spinning nut to the bar link.

The condition can be corrected by installing a stabilizer bar link that has urethane grommets. This material was utilized during the 1991 Model year, before being changed to santoprene in 1992. The new nut should be tightened to full torque and Loctite@ or equivalent should be used to insure a secure fit. If this condition has occurred, check the axle half shaft boots for damage. If they are damaged replace and use the appropriate labor operation.

The urethane grommets are being used in production beginning with the start of the 1993 Model year.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Raise the vehicle and support it with suitable safety stands.

2. Remove the nut, spacer, and link bolt.

3. Install new link bolt, new spacer, and nut.

4. Tighten nut to a torque of 18 N.m (13 lbs. ft.).

5. Lower the vehicle.

Parts are expected to be available on 11/02/92. In case of limited inventory, parts will be placed on 400 control to waive VIP surcharges. Only verifiable emergency orders will be accepted. GMSPO will make every effort to obtain parts. However, the part will be shipped premium transportation at the dealer's expense and all other order types will be placed on backorder until the 400 control is removed.
