INPUT CARRIER TO OUTPUT SHAFT DO NOT REUSE SNAP RING/700-R4

MODELS: 1982 AND 1983 LIGHT DUTY TRUCKS WITH THM 700-R4 TRANSMISSION

When reassembling a THM 700-R4 transmission, do not reuse the input carrier to output shaft snap ring. (See Figure No. 1) This snap ring can be overexpanded during removal, and if reused in this condition it may become dislodged during vehicle operation.

If the snap ring should become dislodged, the output shaft may move rearward and damage both the governor driven gear and the speedometer drive gear. This will cause a condition of no upshifts. NOTICE: When installing a new snap ring (part number 8642230), be certain not to overexpand it.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
