Condition

Some drivers may comment on any or all of the following conditions:

    • No Start
    • Hard Start
    • Rough Idle
    • Other driveability concerns relating to the fuel system

Cause

Under certain conditions, the fuel elements may extract compounds from the fuel filler hose. These hose compounds, when mixed with the gasoline, may deposit onto the fuel injectors, causing the fuel injector to stick in a closed position.

Correction

A revised fuel tank fill pipe assembly, which incorporates a new filler hose, has been developed. If the fuel injectors are sticking due to compound deposits, the new filler hose will correct the condition. However, additional factors may cause fuel injectors to stick, allowing for a repeat condition. Review the vehicle history to determine if a fill pipe assembly has been previously replaced since February 15, 2000. If the fill pipe was not replaced previously, replace the fuel tank fill pipe assembly on affected vehicles. Use the applicable part number listed below. Refer to the Engine Controls subsection of the appropriate Service Manual for filler pipe/hose replacement procedures.

The fuel injectors should also be cleaned as part of this procedure. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 00-06-04-003, dated January 2000 for fuel injector cleaning procedures.
