INTRODUCTION

During 1982 and 1984, many production changes have been added to the THM 700-R4 transmission. The number of bulletins released has become too large to reference quickly. However, it is very important to find and use current information whenever you are servicing this transmission. This summary manual is to assist you in finding the bulletins you need quickly.

This Summary Manual contains the numbers and subjects for service bulletins that pertain to the THM 700-R4 transmissions installed into 1982 thru 1984 model vehicles.

OBJECTIVES:

----------- When you have read this summary manual, you will be able to:

Locate the transmission identification number.

Identify transmission models, vehicle and engine types.

Locate the service bulletins which pertain to the THM 700-R4 transmission, including latest part numbers and service procedures.

Decide if the content of the particular bulletin relates to the condition of the transmission.

ORGANIZATION:

------------ This Summary Manual in organized as follows:

SECTION 1. TRANSMISSION IDENTIFICATION - This section provides charts of the transmissin models, vehicle and engine types by year, the location and decoding of the transmission identification numbers.

SECTION 2. BULLETIN SUMMARY - This section contains charts with the bulletin numbers grouped according to common repairs, i.e., Shift Conditions, No Gears, New Part Numbers; and Service Procedures. The service bulletins contained in this section should be used when repairs are being made, to assure transmission has the latest changes if applicable.

LOCATION OF TRANSMISSION IDENTIFICATION NUMBER.

The transmission identification number is located on the right side of the transmission on the pan rail as shown below.

DECODING OF THE TRANSMISSION IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS.

Refer to the chart and steps listed below for detailed explanation of the transmission identification numbers.

MODEL YEAR:

Tells what model year the transmission was built. EXAMPLE: 9 = 1982, 3 = 1983, 4 = 1984. 5 = 1985.

MODEL:

Transmissin model identification.

JUUAN DATE:

Tells what day of the year the transmission was built. Example: Julian date 001 = January 1, and Julian date 365 = December 31. It is also very important to remember that the transmission model year starts MID YEAR. This means the first transmission built in any model year will start with a higher Julian date.

EXAMPLE: If the first transmission in 1984 was built on August 5th then the Julian date starts at 218 and goes to 365 (December 31). The Julian date will then drop to 001 (January 1) and then continue to 217 (August 4,1985).

Shift Built:

Tells what shift the transmission was built.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
