Evaporative Emission Canister Replacement TrailBlazer, Envoy, Bravada, Rainier

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the fuel tank shield, if equipped. Refer to Fuel Tank Shield Replacement in Frame and Underbody.

  4. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) vapor pipe (4) from the EVAP canister (3).
  5. Disconnect the EVAP vent pipe (2) from the EVAP canister (3).

  7. Disconnect the EVAP purge pipe (2) from the EVAP canister (1).
  8. Important: Do not pry against the surface of the evaporative emissions canister. This could damage the canister.

  9. Remove the EVAP canister (3) from the front tab of the canister bracket (1).

  11. Insert a flat head screwdriver as indicated in illustration.

  12. Object Number: 812972  Size: SH
  13. Pry the canister away from the top tab as indicated in graphic and repeat the process on the lower tab.
  14. Slide the canister forward to disengage the rear tab.

  16. If replacing the EVAP canister bracket (1), remove the canister bracket retaining bolts (2) and remove the bracket.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. If replacing the EVAP canister bracket (1), position the canister bracket on the frame and install the EVAP bracket retaining bolts (2).
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts (2) to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

    Important: When installing the canister into the front tabs considerable force may be necessary.

  3. Install the EVAP canister (3) in the rear tab of the canister bracket  (1) and press the front of the canister into the front tabs.
  4. Ensure the tabs have completely engaged.

  5. Connect the EVAP vent pipe (2) to the EVAP canister (3).
  6. Connect the EVAP vapor pipe (4) to the EVAP canister (3).

  8. Connect the EVAP purge pipe (2) to the EVAP canister (1).
  9. Install the fuel tank shield, if equipped. Refer to Fuel Tank Shield Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  10. Lower the vehicle.

Evaporative Emission Canister Replacement TrailBlazer EXT, Envoy XL, Envoy XUV

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.2L.

  3. Object Number: 887623  Size: SH
  4. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) vapor pipe (2) from the EVAP canister.
  5. Disconnect the EVAP vent pipe (1) from the EVAP canister.
  6. Disconnect the EVAP purge pipe from the EVAP canister. The purge pipe is the small pipe next to the vapor pipe (2).
  7. Important: Do not pry against the surface of the evaporative emissions canister. This could damage the canister.

  8. Remove the EVAP canister from the tabs of the canister bracket by inserting a flat head screwdriver into the center slots of the tabs as indicated in the illustration.

  9. Object Number: 887629  Size: SH
  10. Pry the canister away from the tabs as indicated in the illustration.
  11. Slide the canister away from the single tab side to disengage the EVAP canister from the bracket.

Installation Procedure

    Important: Considerable force may be necessary to install the EVAP canister into the two tab side.

  1. Slide the EVAP canister into the single tab side and press the canister into the two tab side.
  2. Ensure the tabs have completely engaged.

  3. Connect the EVAP purge pipe to the EVAP canister. The purge pipe is the small pipe next to the vapor pipe (2).
  4. Connect the EVAP vent pipe (1) to the EVAP canister.
  5. Connect the EVAP vapor pipe (2) to the EVAP canister.
  6. Install the fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.2L.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
