Removal Procedure

  1. Turn the steering wheel so that the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
  2. Important: Note the relationship of the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft and the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column in order to ensure proper installation.

  3. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the key.
  4. Remove the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 288798  Size: SH
  6. Remove the nut and the bolt that retain the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column.
  7. Remove the upper intermediate shaft from the steering column.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 288798  Size: SH
  1. Install the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the nut and bolt that retain the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  5. Install the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
