J 24319-B Steering Linkage and Tie Rod Puller

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Install a drain pan under the vehicle.
  3. Remove the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.

  4. Object Number: 687432  Size: SH
  5. Remove and discard the outer tie rod retaining nuts.

  6. Object Number: 643351  Size: SH

    Caution: Do not attempt to disconnect a steering linkage joint by driving a wedge between the joint and the attached part. Seal damage may result which will cause premature failure of the joint.

  7. Disconnect the outer tie rods from the steering knuckles using J 24319-B .
  8. Remove the steering gear crossmember. Refer to Front Steering Gear Crossmember Replacement.
  9. Disconnect the lower intermediate shaft from the power steering gear. Refer to Lower Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement.

  10. Object Number: 687443  Size: SH
  11. Remove the power steering hose assembly to the power steering gear retaining bolt.
  12. Remove the power steering hose assembly from the power steering gear.
  13. Support the power steering gear.

  14. Object Number: 687447  Size: SH
  15. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts.
  16. Remove the power steering gear from the vehicle.
  17. Remove the outer tie rods from the inner tie rods. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the outer tie rods. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement.

  2. Object Number: 687447  Size: SH
  3. Install the power steering gear to the vehicle.
  4. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  5. Install the power steering gear mounting bolts and tighten to 110 N·m (81 lb ft).

  6. Object Number: 687443  Size: SH
  7. Remove the support from the power steering gear.
  8. Install the power steering hose assembly to the power steering gear.
  9. Install the power steering hose assembly to the power steering gear retaining bolt and tighten to 12 N·m (106 lb in).
  10. Connect the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear. Refer to Lower Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement.
  11. Install the steering gear crossmember. Refer to Front Steering Gear Crossmember Replacement.

  12. Object Number: 687435  Size: SH
  13. Connect the outer tie rods to the steering knuckles.
  14. Install the new outer tie rod retaining nuts and tighten to 57 N·m (42 lb ft).
  15. Install the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  16. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle.
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.
  19. It is not necessary to adjust the front toe unless a tie rod end or the steering gear has been replaced. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment.
  20. Lower the vehicle.
