Generator Replacement With 4.2L Engine

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .

  3. Object Number: 754344  Size: SH
  4. Remove the air conditioning (A/C) line mounting bracket bolt at the engine lift hook.

  5. Object Number: 750247  Size: SH
  6. Remove the right engine lift hook bolts and remove the lift hook.

  7. Object Number: 753668  Size: SH
  8. Remove the 3 generator mounting bolts and remove the generator.

  9. Object Number: 754357  Size: SH
  10. Disconnect the battery positive cable nut (1) on the generator.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 754357  Size: SH
  1. Install the battery positive cable to the generator and secure the positive cable with the nut (1).
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the generator positive cable nut to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  3. Install the generator and secure the generator with 3 bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the generator bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  5. Install the engine lift hook and secure the lift hook with 2 bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  7. Install the A/C line bracket to the lift hook and secure the bracket with the bolt.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the A/C line bracket bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  9. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  10. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .

Generator Replacement 5.3L Engine

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory in Engine Mechanical - 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L.
  3. Disconnect the generator electrical connector.

  5. Remove the generator cable (3) from the generator, perform the following:
  6. 4.1. Slide the boot (1) down revealing the terminal stud.
    4.2. Remove the generator cable nut (2) from the terminal stud.
    4.3. Remove the generator cable (3).

  7. Remove the generator bolts.
  8. Remove the generator.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the generator.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the generator bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  5. Install the generator cable (3) to the generator, perform the following:
  6. 3.1. Install the generator cable (3).
    3.2. Install the generator cable nut (2) to the terminal stud.

    Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

    3.3. Slide the boot (1) over the terminal stud.

  7. Connect the generator electrical connector.
  8. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory in Engine Mechanical - 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
