Steering Shaft Replacement Tilt Column

Tools Required

J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover

Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.




1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
2. Remove the tilt spring. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement .
3. If necessary, remove the linear shift assembly. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement .

Remove the electrical brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) actuator.

4. Remove the turn signal cancel cam assembly. Refer to Turn Signal Cancel Cam and Steering Shaft Upper Bearing Spring Replacement .
5. Remove the ignition switch and lock housing. Refer to Ignition and Start Switch Replacement .
6. Remove the upper intermediate steering shaft. Refer to Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
7. Remove the lower shaft bearing assembly.



8. Remove the pivot pins (1) using J 21854-01 .



9. Pull the tilt arm in order to disengage the steering wheel lock shoes from the dowel pins (2) in the steering column support assembly.



10. Remove the steering column housing assembly (1).
11. Remove the steering shaft assembly.

1. Install the steering shaft assembly into the steering column housing.
2. Install the steering column housing assembly (1).



3. Using the tilt lever, position the lock shoes to the dowel pins (2).
4. Rotate the tilt head assembly (1) in order to align the holes for the pivot pins.



5. Install the 2  new pivot pins by performing the following steps:

5.1.	Lubricate the pivot pins (1) with GM P/N 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723).

5.2.	Press the pivot pins (1) until the pins are firmly seated.

5.3.	Stake the pivot pins at three new locations (1).




6. Install the lower shaft bearing assembly.
7. Install the upper intermediate steering shaft. Refer to Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
8. Install the ignition switch and lock housing. Refer to Ignition and Start Switch Replacement .
9. If necessary, install the linear shift assembly. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement .
10. Install the turn signal cancel cam assembly. Refer to Turn Signal Cancel Cam and Steering Shaft Upper Bearing Spring Replacement .
11. Install the tilt spring. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement .
12. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR

Steering Shaft Replacement Standard Column

Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.




1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
2. Remove the steering wheel from the column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
3. Remove the ignition switch and lock housing assembly. Refer to Ignition and Start Switch Replacement .
4. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
5. If necessary, remove the linear shift assembly. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement .
6. Remove the lower shaft bearing assembly.



7. Remove the steering shaft assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) and the steering column jacket assembly (3).

1. Install the steering shaft assembly (1) into the steering column support assembly (2).



2. Install the lower shaft bearing assembly.
3. If necessary, install the linear shift assembly. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement .
4. Install the steering column into the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
5. Install the ignition switch and lock housing assembly. Refer to Ignition and Start Switch Replacement .
6. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
7. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
