Condition
Some customers may comment on a binding condition on a 3-4 shift or 4-3 shift. Most often the shift concern will be noticeable when the transmission fluid is hot and may be accompanied by a check engine light and DTC P0797.
Cause
This condition may be caused by a poor surface finish on the case cover hub seal ring grooves, causing seal wear resulting in a leak between the 3-5 Reverse and 4-5-6 clutch fluid passages.
Correction
- Remove the transmission from the vehicle using the transmission replacement procedure in SI.
- Remove the case cover assembly. Refer to the Case Cover and 3-5 Reverse and 4-5-6 Clutch Housing Removal procedure in SI.
- Remove the hub (input shaft support) from the cover.
- Measure the side clearance between each of the case cover hub seal rings and hub seal ring groove. The maximum clearance should be no more than 0.2 mm (0.007874 in).
- Install the new hub with the seals installed to the case cover.
- Install the case cover assembly to the transmission. Refer to the Case Cover Assembly Installation procedure in SI for proper bolt tightening sequence and torque.
- Install the transmission to the vehicle using the transmission replacement procedure in SI.
If the clearance is greater than described above, replace the hub and the hub seal rings. Refer to the Case Cover Assembly Assemble and the Fluid Seal Ring Installation procedure in SI.
Important: A new case cover gasket is not required unless damaged.
