Circuit/System Description

The camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - intake and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust system enables the engine control module (ECM) to change the timing of the camshafts while the engine is operating. The camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - intake and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoid signal from the ECM is pulse width modulated (PWM). The ECM controls the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - intake and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoid duty cycle by controlling the amount of solenoid ON time. The camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - intake and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoid controls the advance or the retard of each camshaft. The camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - intake and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoid controls the oil flow that applies the pressure to advance or retard the camshafts.

Ignition voltage is supplied directly to the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - intake and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoid. The ECM controls the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - intake and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoid by grounding the control circuit with a solid state device called a driver. The driver is equipped with a feedback circuit that is pulled-up to a voltage. The ECM can determine if the control circuit is open, shorted to ground, or shorted to a voltage by monitoring the feedback voltage.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • The engine speed is greater than 80 RPM.
    • DTC P0606 00 is not set.
    • The ignition voltage is between 10-18 V.
    • The ECM has commanded the camshaft position actuator intake or camshaft position actuator exhaust solenoid ON and OFF at least once during the ignition cycle.
    • DTCs P0010 00, P0013 00, P2088 00, P0289 00, P2090 00, and P2091 00 run continuously once the above conditions are met for greater than 1 s.

P2090 00

The ECM detects a short to ground in the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - intake and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust Solenoid circuits for greater than 1 s or a cumulative of 5 s, when the solenoid is commanded OFF.

P2091 00

The ECM detects a short to voltage in the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - intake and camshaft position actuator solenoid valve - exhaust solenoid circuits for greater than 1 s or a cumulative of 5 s, when the solenoid is commanded ON.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTCs P0010 00, P0013 00, P2088 00, P2089 00, P2090 00, P2090 01 are type B DTCs.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTCs P0010 00, P0013 00, P2088 00, P2089 00, P2090 00, P2091 00 are type B DTCs.

Diagnostic Aids

If the condition is intermittent, move the related harnesses and connectors, with the engine operating, while monitoring the scan tool circuit status parameters for the component. The circuit status parameters change from OK or not run to fault if there is a condition with the circuit or a connection.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. With the engine at normal operating temperature, raise the engine speed to 2000 RPM for 10 s. DTCs P0010 00, P0013 00, P2088 00, P2098 00, P2090 00, and P2091 00 should not set.
  2. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the freeze frame/failure records data.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate Q6F Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or the Q6E Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust.
  2. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the appropriate Q6F Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or the Q6E Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust ignition circuit terminal 1 and ground.
  3. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal and the ignition circuit fuse is open, test all the components connected to the ignition circuit and replace as necessary.
  4. Connect a DMM, set on the diode setting, between the Q6F Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or the Q6E Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust control circuit terminal 2 and ground. The voltage should be greater than 2.0 V.
  5. If the DMM displays OL, test the control circuit terminal 2 of the Q6F Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or the Q6E Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module (ECM).
If less than the specified value, test the control circuit terminal 2 of the Q6F Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or the Q6E Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module (ECM).
  6. Command the Q6F Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or the Q6E Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust CMP actuator solenoid ON and OFF with a scan tool. The DMM should transition from greater than 2 V when commanded OFF to less than 1 V, when commanded ON.
  7. If the circuit voltage does not correspond to the specified values, replace the K20 Engine Control Module (ECM).
  8. If all circuits/connections test normal, test or replace the Q6F Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or the Q6E Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust CMP actuator solenoid.

Component Testing

Static Test

  1. Test for 7-12 Ω between the terminals of the Q6F Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or the Q6E Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust CMP actuator solenoid.
  2. If not within the specified range, replace the Q6F Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or the Q6E Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust CMP actuator solenoid.
  3. Test for greater than 500 MΩ between each terminal of the Q6F Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or the Q6E Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust CMP actuator solenoid and the CMP actuator solenoid housing.
  4. If less than the specified value, replace the Q6F Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Intake or the Q6E Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Valve - Exhaust CMP actuator solenoid valve.
