Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.

  3. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  4. Use a utility stand in order to support the rear of the frame .
  5. Remove the frame rear bolts
  6. Lower the frame rear to gain clearance.
  7. Place the drain pan under the power steering pump and the power steering gear.

  9. Remove the power steering gear hose clip.
  10. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the steering gear.
  11. Raise the rear of the frame.
  12. Install the frame bolts. Fully seat the frame bolts. Do NOT tighten the frame bolts.
  13. Remove the utility stand.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical-3.4L.

  17. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the pump.
  18. Remove the power steering hose from the hose retainer.
  19. Remove the inlet hose.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the inlet hose.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the pump.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  5. Install the power steering hose retainer to the power steering gear.
  6. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical-3.4L.
  7. Raise the vehicle.
  8. Install a utility stand in order to support the frame assembly.
  9. Remove the frame rear bolts.
  10. Use the utility stand in order to lower the frame rear to gain access.

  11. Object Number: 417973  Size: SH
  12. Connect the power steering hose to the steering gear.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  14. Install the power steering gear hose clip.
  15. Use the utility stand in order to raise the frame rear.
  16. Install the frame rear bolts.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 165 N·m (122 lb ft).

  18. Remove the utility stand.
  19. Install the intermediate shaft to the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  20. Lower the vehicle.
  21. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
