Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the right side engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  3. Place the drain pan under the power steering pump and the power steering gear.

  4. Object Number: 417969  Size: SH
  5. Disconnect the return hose from the cooler pipe.
  6. Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.

  7. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  8. Use a utility stand in order to support the frame rear.
  9. Remove the rear frame bolts.
  10. Use the utility stand to lower the rear of the frame for clearance.

  12. Remove the power steering gear heat shield and hose clip.
  13. Disconnect the cooler pipe from the steering gear.

  14. Object Number: 417929  Size: SH
  15. Remove the cooler pipe retainer bolt/screw.
  16. Remove the cooler pipe retainer.
  17. Remove the cooler pipe from the frame retainers and vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 417929  Size: SH
  1. Install the cooler pipe to the vehicle and the frame retainers.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the cooler pipe retainer to the frame.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the cooler pipe retainer bolt/screw to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  5. Connect the cooler pipe to the steering gear.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  7. Install the power steering gear hose clip.

  8. Object Number: 417969  Size: SH
  9. Connect the power steering return hose to the cooler pipe.
  10. Raise the frame rear position.
  11. Install the rear frame bolts.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 165 N·m (122 lb ft).

  13. Remove the utility stand.
  14. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  15. Install the right side engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  16. Lower the vehicle.
  17. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
