Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  5. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  6. Remove the power steering pump with lines. Move the power steering pump aside. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  7. Remove the thermostat bypass pipe from the engine front cover. Refer to HVAC.
  8. Remove the lower radiator hose from the coolant pump. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  9. Remove the drive belt shield.
  10. Remove the coolant pump pulley. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.

  12. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Controls.

  13. Object Number: 95865  Size: SH
  14. Remove the engine front cover bolts.
  15. Remove the engine front cover.

  16. Object Number: 61818  Size: SH
  17. Remove the engine front cover gasket.
  18. Remove the coolant pump from the engine front cover. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  19. Clean the engine front cover and engine block gasket surfaces.
  20. Inspect the engine front cover for damage to the seals or the gasket surface.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the coolant pump to the engine front cover. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.

  2. Object Number: 61819  Size: SH
  3. Coat both sides of the lower tabs of the engine front cover gasket with sealant GM P/N 1052080 or equivalent.

  4. Object Number: 61818  Size: SH
  5. Install the engine front cover gasket.

  6. Object Number: 95865  Size: SH
  7. Install the engine front cover.
  8. Install the engine front cover bolts.
  9. Tighten

        • Tighten the five small bolts (1) to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).
        • Tighten the three large bolts (2) to 55 N·m (41 lb ft).
        • Tighten the two large bolts (3) to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Install the crankshaft position sensor to the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Controls.
  11. Install the coolant pump pulley. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  12. Install the drive belt shield.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  14. Install the lower radiator outlet hose to the coolant pump. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  15. Install the thermostat bypass pipe to the engine front cover. Refer to HVAC.
  16. Install the power steering pump with lines. Refer to Power Steering Gear And Pump.
  17. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  18. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  19. Fill the engine with oil. Refer to Maintenance and Lubrication.
  20. Fill the cooling system with coolant. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  21. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery.
