Rear Blower Motor Noise (Shim Blower Motor with Washers)

Condition

Some customers may comment on a noise coming from the rear blower motor. This noise usually occurs with lower ambient temperatures.

Cause

This noise may be due to the blower motor fan contacting the case.

Correction

Shim the blower motor with washers using the procedure below.

  1. Remove the rear storage compartment.
  2. Remove the left 3rd row seat assembly.
  3. Remove both left upper seat belt anchor bolts from the belt guide loops.
  4. Remove the left upper rear trim finish panel.
  5. Remove the body lock pillar upper trim panel.
  6. Remove the left body side rear trim panel.
  7. Remove the left rear seat shoulder belt retractor cover.
  8. Remove the left body side rear trim panel cup holder.
  9. Remove the liftgate sill plate.
  10. Remove the left seat belt retractor retainer bolt.
  11. Remove the left upper cargo net retainer.
  12. Remove the left rear quarter trim panel.
  13. Remove the bolts and the rear A/C outlet pillar duct, if equipped, with power sliding door.
  14. Remove the bolts and the power sliding door actuator with bracket attached from the body, if equipped.
  15. Disconnect the rear blower motor electrical.
  16. Remove the rear blower motor mounting screws.
  17. Remove the rear blower mounting from the case.
  18. Verify that the blower motor fan is fully seated on the shaft, if not, then push the fan down on shaft to seat.
  19. From the bottom side of the blower motor, determine if washers are present at the screw hole locations; if not add 2 flat washers, GM P/N 15224331, or equivalent washer with an inside diameter of 8 mm (.3125 in) and an outside diameter of 14 mm (.5625 in) at each location. Recommended thickness of washer(s) should equal 2 mm (.0787 in). Use an adhesive material to hold the washers in place.
  20. Install the rear blower mounting from the case.
  21. Install the rear blower motor mounting screws.
  22. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 1.6N·m(14 lb in).

  23. Connect the rear blower motor electrical. Turn on the blower motor and verify that the noise has been eliminated.
  24. Install the power sliding door actuator with bracket attached and bolts to the body.
  25. Install the rear A/C outlet pillar duct and bolts.
  26. Install the left rear quarter trim panel.
  27. Install the left upper cargo net retainer.
  28. Install the left seat belt retractor retainer bolt.
  29. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 42N·m(31 lb ft).

  30. Install the liftgate sill plate.
  31. Install the left body side rear trim panel cup holder.
  32. Install the left rear seat shoulder belt retractor cover.
  33. Install the left body side rear trim panel.
  34. Install the body lock pillar upper trim panel.
  35. Install the left upper rear trim finish panel.
  36. Install both left upper seat belt anchor bolts to the belt guide loops.
  37. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 43N·m(32 lb ft).

  38. Install the left 3rd row seat assembly.
  39. Install the rear storage compartment.
