The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom described in the PI.

Condition/Concern:

Cylinder Liner Replacement Information for all 2002 - 2005 2.8L, 3.5L and 4.2L Inline Truck Engines

Recommendation/Instructions:

If a cracked liner is found on a 2002 Model Year 4.2L engine, please review special policy 03019 and determine if it applies to the vehicle by comparing the VIN of the vehicle to the VIN breakpoints in the special policy. If it applies and a cracked liner was found, engine replacement will be necessary. For all others, please refer to the following information: If a cracked, damaged or out of specification liner is found, inspect the engine block for signs of damage, especially at the top of the liner.

   •

If engine block damage is found, engine replacement will be necessary since replacement cylinder liners should not be installed in a damaged engine block.

   •

If no engine block damage is found, engine replacement is not necessary since new cylinder liners can be installed by following 04-06-01-022. At this time, the service part number for a cylinder liner is 88984239.

*Note: It is possible to inspect for a cracked cylinder liner by using a bore scope to look through a spark plug hole or intake port (with the intake manifold removed and the intake valves open). Typically, if cracked, the cylinder liner will display a horizontal crack that is about a 1/4 inch below the engine block deck surface (head gasket area). Also, if a damaged spark plug tip is found, it is a good sign that the associated liner may be cracked because it was most likely damaged by cylinder debris that may be present as a result of a cracked liner.
