Did you review the Charging System Description and the Charging System Circuit Description and perform the necessary inspections?

Go to Step 2

Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the engine crank/crank slowly but does not start?

Go to Step 3

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

  1. Connect a digital multimeter across the battery terminals.
  2. Measure the voltage while cranking the engine.

Is the voltage greater than 9.6 volts?

Go to Step 4

Go to Battery Load Test

  1. Connect a digital multimeter between the negative (-) battery terminal and the engine block.
  2. Measure the voltage while cranking the engine.

Is the voltage greater than 0.5 volts?

Go to Step 6

Go to Step 5

  1. Connect a digital multimeter between the positive (+) battery terminal and the starter solenoid terminal B.
  2. Measure the voltage while cranking the engine.

Is the voltage greater than 0.5 volts?

Go to Step 6

Go to Step 7

Replace the battery cable. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement .

Is the repair complete?

Go to Step 8

Repair or replace the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement and Starter Motor Overhaul .
