Starter Replacement 8.1L Engine

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 662999  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. If equipped with four wheel drive (4WD), remove the front axle mounting bracket nuts.
  4. Important: DO NOT remove the bolt.

  5. If equipped with 4WD, reposition the front axle mounting bracket bolt until the bolt tip is flush with the support bushing.

  7. Remove the starter bolts.
  8. Slide the starter forward until the starter clears the transmission.

  9. Object Number: 750961  Size: SH
  10. Remove the starter lead nut.
  11. Remove the starter lead (4) from the starter.

  12. Object Number: 751548  Size: SH
  13. Remove the positive cable nut.
  14. Remove the positive cable from the starter.

  15. Object Number: 747162  Size: SH
  16. If necessary, remove the starter heat shield bolts, nut, and shield.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 747162  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. If necessary, install the starter heat shield, nut and bolts.
  2. Tighten

        • Tighten the bolts to 3 N·m (35 lb in).
        • Tighten the nut to 5 N·m (44 lb in).

  3. Install the positive cable to the starter.
  4. Install the positive cable nut.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  6. Install the starter lead (4) to the starter.
  7. Install the starter lead nut.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 3.4 N·m (30 lb in).

  9. Position the starter into place.
  10. Install the starter bolts.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).


    Object Number: 662999  Size: SH
  12. If equipped with 4WD, position the front axle mounting bracket bolt until the bolt is fully seated.
  13. If equipped with 4WD, install the front axle mounting bracket nuts.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 95 N·m (70 lb ft).

  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .

Starter Replacement 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L Engines

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 663487  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Remove the engine oil level indicator tube fasteners and position aside. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Remove the transmission cover bolt.

  5. Object Number: 662999  Size: SH
  6. If equipped with four wheel drive (4WD), remove the front axle mounting bracket nuts.
  7. Important: DO NOT remove the bolt.

  8. If equipped with 4WD, reposition the front axle mounting bracket bolt until the bolt tip is flush with the support bushing.

  9. Object Number: 663527  Size: SH
  10. Remove the starter bolts.
  11. Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
  12. Slide the starter forward until the starter clears the transmission.

  13. Object Number: 662991  Size: SH
  14. Remove the starter lead nut (3).
  15. Remove the starter lead (2) from the starter.

  16. Object Number: 759622  Size: SH
  17. Remove the positive cable nut (1).
  18. Remove the positive cable from the starter.

  19. Object Number: 663489  Size: SH
  20. Place the starter on a workbench.
  21. If necessary, unsnap the transmission cover from the starter.

  22. Object Number: 663472  Size: SH
  23. If necessary, remove the starter heat shield.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 663472  Size: SH
  1. If necessary, install the starter heat shield.

  2. Object Number: 663489  Size: SH
  3. If necessary, snap the transmission cover to the starter.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 759622  Size: SH
  5. Install the positive cable to the starter.
  6. Install the positive cable nut (1).
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 9 N·m (80 lb in).


    Object Number: 662991  Size: SH
  8. Install the starter lead (2) to the starter.
  9. Install the starter lead nut (3).
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 3.4 N·m (30 lb in).


    Object Number: 663527  Size: SH
  11. Position the starter into place.
  12. Install the starter bolts.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  14. Connect the oil level sensor electrical connector.

  15. Object Number: 662999  Size: SH
  16. If equipped with 4WD, position the front axle mounting bracket bolt until the bolt is fully seated.
  17. If equipped with 4WD, install the front axle mounting bracket nuts.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 95 N·m (70 lb ft).

  19. Install the transmission cover bolt.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22. Install the engine oil level indicator tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  23. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
