Removal Procedure

    Notice: When lifting the vehicle do not allow the jack to touch the rear steering gear. If the jack touches the rear steering gear you may damage the gear or the rack and pinion boots. If the boots are damaged replace the rack and pinion boot.

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  3. Object Number: 747761  Size: SH
  4. Remove the bolt (8) and nut (2) retaining the bracket to the axle.
  5. Remove the bracket (7) from the vehicle.
  6. Remove the bolt (4) retaining the brake hose bracket (3) to the axle.

  7. Object Number: 747756  Size: SH
  8. Using the J 44664 (2), remove the nut (1) retaining the upper ball joint to the steering knuckle.

  9. Object Number: 742177  Size: SH
  10. Remove the upper ball joint (3) retaining bolts (2) and stud (1).

  11. Object Number: 747764  Size: SH
  12. Using the J 44663 (2) , remove the upper ball joint stud from the steering knuckle.

  13. Object Number: 748894  Size: SH
  14. Remove the upper ball joint (1) from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 748894  Size: SH
  1. Install the upper ball joint (1) to the steering knuckle.

  2. Object Number: 742177  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the upper ball joint retaining bolts (2) and stud (1).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 110 N·m (81 lb ft).

  5. Install the nut (1) retaining the upper ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use the J 44664 (2) in order to tighten the joint.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the upper ball joint to the steering knuckle nut to 200 N·m (147 lb ft).

  7. Install the bracket (7) to the axle.

  8. Object Number: 747761  Size: SH
  9. Install the bolt (8) and nut (2) retaining the bracket to the axle.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt and nut to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  11. Install the bolt (4) retaining the brake hose bracket (3) to the axle.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the brake hose bracket retaining bolt to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  13. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Perform a four wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.
