Removal Procedure

    Notice: When lifting the vehicle do not allow the jack to touch the rear steering gear. If the jack touches the rear steering gear you may damage the gear or the rack and pinion boots. If the boots are damaged replace the rack and pinion boot.

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the rack and pinion boot from the steering gear. Refer to Rack and Pinion Boot Replacement .

    Important: The inner tie rod support clamp has right hand threads. The inner tie rod support nut has left hand threads. To remove the support clamp turn the clamp counterclockwise.

  5. Using the J 44665-1 (1) and J 44665-2 (2) remove the inner tie rod support clamp.

  7. Remove the inner tie rod (1) from the steering gear using the J 44665-2 (2) .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the inner tie rod to the steering gear.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Using theJ 44665-2 (2) tighten the inner tie rod (1).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the inner tie rod to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).

  5. Install the inner tie rod support clamp to the steering gear. Use the J 44665-1 (1) and the J 44665-2 (2) in order to tighten the inner tie rod support clamp.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the inner tie rod support clamp to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  7. Install the rack and pinion boot to the steering gear. Refer to Rack and Pinion Boot Replacement .
  8. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Perform a four wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.
