Lock System Will Not Unlock

Probable Cause

Correction

Damaged steering lock set

Replace the steering lock set.

The lack of free movement for the ignition switch

Lubricate the ignition switch.

Binding or damaged steering column housing

    • Remove the steering shaft and clear the steering column housing.
    • Replace the steering column housing if necessary.

Lock System Will Not Lock

Probable Cause

Correction

If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, the lever is not in PARK.

Shift the lever to PARK.

With the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position, remove the key and rotate the steering wheel 120 degrees to the left.

If the steering column does not lock after 120 degree rotation, remove the trim panels around the ignition lock cylinder. Inspect the ignition lock cylinder for damage. Replace the ignition lock cylinder if necessary.

Damaged steering lock set

Replace the steering lock set.

The lack of free movement for the ignition switch.

Lubricate the ignition switch.

Binding or damaged steering column housing

    • Remove the steering shaft and clear the steering column housing.
    • Replace the steering column housing if necessary.

High Lock Effort

Damaged steering lock set

Replace the steering lock set.

The lack of free movement for the ignition switch

Lubricate the ignition switch.

Extreme misalignment of the housing to the cover

    • Realign the cover on the housing.
    • Replace the cover if necessary.

Key Cannot Be Removed in the LOCK position

Probable Cause

Correction

If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, the lever is not in PARK.

Shift the lever to PARK.

The ignition switch is set incorrectly.

Reset the ignition switch.

Damaged steering lock set

Replace the steering lock set.

High Steering Shaft Effort

Probable Cause

Column misalignment

Replace the alignment spacer.

A damaged bearing

Replace the steering column housing.

The lack of free movement for the steering shaft universal joint

    • Lubricate the steering shaft universal joint.
    • Replace the steering column shaft if necessary.

Lash in the Steering Column

Probable Cause

Loose steering column bracket mounting nuts

Tighten the steering column bracket mounting nuts.

Loose steering column housing support bolts

Tighten the steering column housing support bolts.

The bearing is seated incorrectly in the housing.

    • Correctly seat the bearing.
    • Replace the column housing if necessary.

Loose Steering Wheel

Tighten the steering column housing support bolts.

Turn Signal Will Not Stay in the Turn Position

An improperly installed signal and light switch

Remove, inspect, and install the signal and light switch.

Broken or missing components in the cancelling mechanism

Replace the signal and light switch.

Foreign material in the signal and light switch housing

Remove any foreign material.

Turn Signal Will Not Cancel

Broken or missing components in the cancelling mechanism

Replace the signal and light switch.

Turn Signal and Dimmer Switch Difficult to Operate

An improperly installed signal and light switch

Remove, inspect, and install the signal and light switch.

Foreign material in the signal and light switch housing

Remove any foreign material.

Turn Signal Will Not Indicate Lane Change

Broken lane change pressure pad

Replace the signal and light switch.

Broken spring hanger

Replace the signal and light switch.

Improper functioning of the lane change spring

Replace the signal and light switch.

An improperly installed signal and light switch

Remove, inspect, and install the signal and light switch.

No Turn Signal Lamps

An inoperative turn signal flasher

Replace the blinker unit.

A faulty signal and light switch

Reconnect the chassis to column connector.

    • Reconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
    • Replace the ignition switch electrical connector if necessary.

Ignition Switch Will Not Turn
