Circuit Description

When the ignition switch is first turned ON, ignition voltage is applied to the indicator lamp and also to the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) input terminal A10. The SDM responds by flashing the AIR BAG indicator 7 times. If the SDM cannot detect voltage on the indicator circuit, a DTC B0061 will be set.

The SDM also attempts to turn on the AIR BAG indicator, but the indicator will not turn on if inputs have been correctly processed.

DTC Descriptors

This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC:

DTC B0061 Warning Lamp Circuit Open or Short to Ground

Conditions for Running the DTC

Ignition voltage is within the normal operating voltage range.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

DTC B0061 Will Set When During continuous monitoring, the SDM fails to detect voltage at terminal A18, the input terminal for the AIR BAG indicator, for 500 milliseconds.

Action Taken When The DTC Sets

The SDM commands the AIR BAG indicator ON.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists and the scan tool Clear DTCs function is used.

Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

  1. Remove the driver information center (DIC).
  2. Measure the voltage at DIC connector terminal A6.

Is voltage as specified?

9-16 V

Go to Step 3

  1. Remove the DIC.
  2. Check for continuity between terminals A6 and B8 of DIC.

Is continuity present?

Go to Step 5

Repair the open, high resistance or short to ground in air bag indicator voltage supply circuit.

Is the repair complete?

--

Go to Step 9

  1. Turn the ignition to LOCK and remove the key.
  2. Disconnect the passenger air bag connector and the steering wheel module coil connector on the steering column.
  3. Disconnect the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) connector.
  4. Turn the ignition ON.
  5. Measure voltage at terminal A18 of the SDM connector.

Is the voltage as specified?

9-16 V

Repair the open or high resistance in the air bag indicator control circuit.

Replace the DIC.

Replace the SDM. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module Replacement .

  1. Reconnect all SIR components.
  2. Verify that all components, connectors and connector position assurances (CPAs) are properly mounted.
  3. Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs.
  4. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC as specified in the supporting text.
