Steering Gear Replacement Rack and Pinion

Preliminary Procedures

  1. Remove the front tire/wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  2. Disconnect the steering shaft coupling from the steering gear. Refer to Steering Shaft Coupling Replacement.

Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Nut (Qty: 2)

Notice: Do not attempt to disconnect a steering linkage joint by driving a wedge between the joint and the attached part. Seal damage may result which will cause premature failure of the joint.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

Tighten
60 N·m (44 lb ft)

Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod (Qty: 2)

Procedure

Use puller J 24319-B to separate the steering linkage outer tie rods from the steering knuckles.

Power Steering Gear Inlet Hose Retaining Plate Bolt

Procedure

  1. Remove as much power steering fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
  2. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.

Tighten
12 N·m (106 lb in)

Power Steering Gear Inlet/Outlet Hose (Qty: 2)

Notice: Refer to Power Steering Hose Disconnected Notice in the Preface section.

Procedure

Pull the power steering gear inlet/outlet hoses out of the steering gear.

Tip
Keep the area around the power steering gear inlet/outlet hoses and the steering gear openings clean.

Left Side Steering Gear Bolt (Qty: 2)

Tighten
200 N·m (148 lb ft)

Right Side Steering Gear Bolt (Qty: 2)

Tighten
100 N·m (74 lb ft)

Steering Gear

Procedure

  1. Use remover/installer J 44586 to replace the steering gear seals if needed.
  2. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.
  3. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment.

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove as much power steering fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
  2. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  4. Notice: Do not start the vehicle with any power steering gear inlet or outlet hoses disconnected. When disconnected, plug or cap all openings of components. Failure to do so could result in contamination or loss of power steering fluid and damage to the system.

  5. Remove the engine shield, if equipped. Refer to Engine Shield Replacement.
  6. If equipped with a diesel engine, remove the left wheelhouse liner. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Left Side.
  7. Disconnect the steering hoses from the steering gear.
  8. Disconnect the steering shaft coupling from the steering gear. Refer to Steering Shaft Coupling Replacement.

  9. Object Number: 1864181  Size: SH

    Important: Discard the pitman arm nut.

  10. Remove the pitman arm nut (1).

  11. Object Number: 832396  Size: SH
  12. Separate the pitman arm from the relay rod using puller J 24319-B .

  13. Object Number: 1864179  Size: SH
  14. Remove the steering gear bolts (1).
  15. Remove the steering gear from the vehicle.
  16. Transfer the pitman arm as necessary. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the pitman arm if necessary. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement.
  2. Install the steering gear to the vehicle.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1864179  Size: SH

    Important: Start all of the steering gear bolts by hand and fully seat them before finalizing the torque.

  4. Install the steering gear bolts (1).
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 150 N·m (110 lb ft).

  6. Install the pitman arm to the relay rod.
  7. Install the pitman arm nut (1).
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 62 N·m (46 lb ft).

  9. Connect the power steering hoses to the steering gear.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the hoses fittings to 32 N·m (24 lb ft).

  11. Connect the steering shaft coupling. Refer to Steering Shaft Coupling Replacement.
  12. Clean any excess fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  13. If equipped with a diesel engine, install the left wheelhouse liner. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Left Side.
  14. Install the engine shield, if equipped. Refer to Engine Shield Replacement.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.
