Removal Procedure

Notice: Refer to Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 177390  Size: SH
  1. Apply the parking brake and block the wheels.
  2. Disconnect the brake pipes from the master cylinder.
  3. Important: Install a rubber cap or plug to the exposed brake pipe fitting ends in order to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  4. Plug the open brake pipe ends.

  6. Remove the master cylinder nuts and bolts.
  7. Remove the master cylinder from the vehicle.
  8. Drain the master cylinder reservoir of all the brake fluid.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 171911  Size: SH
  1. Bench bleed the master cylinder. Refer to Master Cylinder Bench Bleeding .

  2. Object Number: 177372  Size: SH
  3. Install the master cylinder to the vehicle.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the master cylinder bolts and nuts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 36 N·m (27 lb ft).

  7. Connect the brake pipes to the master cylinder.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the pipe nuts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  9. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding .
