SUBJECT: INFORMATION ON GM GOODWRENCH REMANUFACTURED 4.3L V6 (RPO L35) ENGINES FOR WARRANTY SERVICE LABOR TIME CODE J1830

MODELS: 1994 CHEVROLET AND GMC M/L AND S/T MODELS 1994 OLDSMOBILE BRAVADA WITH 4.3L V6 ENGINES (VIN W--RPO L35)

DUE TO PRODUCT SHORTAGES ON NEW 1994 4.3L L35 GOODWRENCH ENGINES, GOODWRENCH REMANUFACTURED ENGINES MAY BE USED FOR IN-WARRANTY REPAIRS WHEN A NEW GM GOODWRENCH ENGINE IS NOT AVAILABLE.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ARE AC DELCO ENGINES TO BE USED FOR WARRANTY PURPOSES. IF YOU ARE UNCERTAIN OF WHICH ENGINE TO USE, CONTACT YOUR GENERAL MOTORS SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE FOR DETAILS.

USE OF THE REMANUFACTURED GM GOODWRENCH 4.3L V6 ENGINE (RPO L35) FOR MODEL YEAR 1994 WARRANTY SERVICE APPLICATIONS LISTED ABOVE WILL REQUIRE THE USE OF A NEW LABOR TIME CODE J1830.

LABOR TIME CODE J1830 INCLUDES ADDITIONAL TIME FOR THE TRANSFER OF ENGINE COMPONENTS, THE OIL PUMP PRIME PROCEDURE, ENGINE BREAK-IN, ETC.

IMPORTANT: STANDARD SAFETY PRECAUTIONS, INCLUDING THE USE OF SAFETY GLASSES, SHOULD BE OBSERVED DURING ENGINE PREPARATION AND INSTALLATION.

THE FOLLOWING SOURCES OF INFORMATION SHOULD BE USED WHEN INSTALLING THIS ENGINE.

1. THE SERVICE MANUAL CAN BE REFERENCED, AS NEEDED, FOR SPECIFIC COMPONENT/AREA INFORMATION.

2. THE 1997 GOODWRENCH REFERENCE GUIDE FOR NEW AND REMANUFACTURED ENGINES. THIS REFERENCE GUIDE PROVIDES SPECIFIC NOTICES AND INFORMATION FOR THIS ENGINE.

3. AN INSTRUCTION SHEET IS PACKAGED WITH EACH GM GOODWRENCH REMANUFACTURED ENGINE. THIS INSTRUCTION SHEET SHOULD BE FOLLOWED CAREFULLY, TAKE PARTICULAR NOTE OF 'CAUTIONS', 'WARNINGS', PROCEDURES AND SPECIFIC PART NUMBERS.

PLEASE TAKE CAREFUL NOTE OF INSTRUCTION SHEET WARNINGS RELATING TO:

A) THE USE OF 'SURFACE CONDITIONING DISCS'.

WHEN CLEANING GASKET SEALING SURFACES ON THE REMANUFACTURED ENGINES AND/OR CLEANING PARTS FROM THE FAILED ENGINE TO BE REUSED, THE USE OF SURFACE CONDITIONING DISCS WHICH CONTAIN ABRASIVES SUCH AS ALUMINUM OXIDE MAY CAUSE INFANT BEARING FAILURE.

B) COMPONENT FLUSHING/REPLACEMENT ON VEHICLES WHERE THE ENGINES FAILED EITHER CATASTROPHICALLY, OR DUE TO BEARING FAILURE.

4. THE FOLLOWING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SHOULD BE REFERENCED AS NEEDED:

A) OIL PUMP PRIME PROCEDURE 1. THIS PROCEDURE SHOULD BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO INSTALLATION OF THE ENGINE IN THE VEHICLE, AND REQUIRES THAT:

2. THE OIL PUMP, PICK-UP TUBE, SCREEN, OIL PAN, OIL FILTER, ENGINE OIL AND INTAKE MANIFOLD BE INSTALLED.

3. FIELD USE SUGGESTS THAT: A) A DISCARDED DISTRIBUTOR ASSEMBLY (WITH THE CAP, GEAR AND ROTOR/ROTOR PLATE REMOVED), OR

B) A DISTRIBUTOR SHAFT (GEAR REMOVED), OR

C) A SUITABLE TOOL FROM AN OUTSIDE SUPPLIER TO ROTATE THE OIL PUMP.

AN EXAMPLE OF THIS TYPE OF TOOL WOULD BE A GOODSON ENGINE OIL PRIMER SHAFT NO. EPS-4*.

B) ENGINE BREAK-IN 1. START THE ENGINE, AND LET IT IDLE FOR 10 TO 20 MINUTES TO STABILIZE THE OIL PRESSURE.

2. DURING THIS TIME ADJUST TIMING AND VALVE CLEARANCE.

3. WITH: A) THE PARKING BRAKE ON, AND

B) THE VEHICLE FRONT WHEELS CHUCKED TO PREVENT VEHICLE MOVEMENT TAKING CARE TO INSURE THE SAFETY OF OTHER PEOPLE, EQUIPMENT AND VEHICLES.

C) THE ENGINE RUNNING.

D) THE TRANSMISSION: -- IN 'DRIVE' FOR AUTO TRANS. VEHICLES (2WD IN 4WD AUTO TRANS VEHICLES) -- IN 'NEUTRAL' FOR MANUAL TRANS. VEHICLES

LIGHTLY LOAD THE ENGINE BY PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO INCREASE ENGINE RPM TO 2000-2500 FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 SECONDS.

4. REPEAT THIS PROCEDURE 5 TIMES.

5. DRAIN AND CHANGE THE ENGINE OIL AND FILTER. USE ENGINE OIL OF THE PROPER VISCOSITY AND GRADE.

* THE GOODSON ENGINE OIL PRIMER SHAFT NO. EPS-4 CAN BE OBTAINED FROM LOCAL AUTOMOTIVE TOOL SUPPLY SOURCES OR FROM GOODSON DIRECT.

WE BELIEVE THIS SOURCE AND THEIR PRODUCT TO BE RELIABLE. THERE MAY BE ADDITIONAL MANUFACTURERS OF SUCH PRODUCTS.
