Subject:Cigar Lighter Housing Pulls Out Of Dash (Replace Lamp Lens Assembly)

Models:2000-2002 Chevrolet Prizm
2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe



Condition

Some customers may comment that the cigar lighter pulls out of the dash when removing their cell phone charging adaptor.

Cause

The retaining tabs may be weak allowing the assembly to pull out of the IP.

Correction

Replacement Procedure for Vibe

Replace the cigar lighter lamp lens assembly.

  1. Remove the manual transmission shift knob, if equipped.
  2. Remove the A/C control knob and screw.
  3. Use a flat blade screw driver to release the retaining clips and to remove the trim plate.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connectors to the lighter and to the accessory power receptacle, if equipped.
  5. Remove the cigar lighter rear retainer from the cigar element housing.
  6. Remove the cigar lighter element.
  7. Remove the cigar element housing from the front of the trim plate by turning counterclockwise 90 degrees and pushing on the back of the element housing.
  8. Install the lighter lamp lens assembly . The assembly has two tabs that will lock in place to the trim panel.

  10. Install the lighter housing into the lighter lamp lens. The lens assembly has two tabs that will lock to the lighter housing as seen in the illustration above.
  11. Install the electrical connectors to the lighter element and to the accessory power receptacle, if equipped.
  12. Install the trim plate.
  13. Install the trim panel screw and the A/C knob.
  14. Install the manual transmission shift, if equipped.
  15. Install the cigar lighter element.

Important: If the new style lighter lamp lens assembly has to be removed or the element housing has to be removed, use a small flat blade screw driver to release the locking tabs. Insert the screw driver between the locking tab and the element housing. Raise the tabs away from the element housing slightly while pushing the element housing. The element housing will slide out of the lighter lamp lens assembly. Push down on the locking tabs on the lighter lamp lens assembly to remove it from the trim plate.

Replacement Procedure for Prizm

Replace the cigar lighter lamp lens assembly.

  1. Remove the instrument panel ashtray from the instrument panel ashtray housing by depressing the spring loaded tab and pulling rearward.
  2. With a flat blade screw driver, release the 6 retaining clips and remove the trim plate.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the lighter.
  4. Remove the cigar lighter rear retainer from the cigar element housing.
  5. Remove the cigar element housing from the front of the trim plate by turning counterclockwise 90 degrees and pushing on the back of the element housing.
  6. Install the cigar lighter lamp lens assembly. The assembly has two tabs that will lock in place to the trim panel.

  8. Install the cigar lighter element housing into the lamp lens assembly. The lens assembly has two tabs that will lock the lighter housing as seen in the illustration above.
  9. Install the electrical connectors to the cigar lighter.
  10. Install the trim plate.
  11. Install the cigar element.

Important: If the new style lighter lamp lens assembly has to be removed or the element housing has to be removed, use a small flat blade screw driver to release the locking tabs. Insert the screw driver between the locking tab and the element housing. Raise the tabs away from the element housing slightly while pushing the element housing. The element housing will slide out of the lighter lamp lens assembly. Push down on the locking tabs on the lighter lamp lens assembly to remove it from the trim plate.
