    • J 21177-A Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance

    Important: The brake shoes will adjust by moderate brake pedal application. The vehicle does not have to be driven to adjust the brakes.

  1. Depress the brake pedal 3 times with 30 kg (66 lbs) of force using the J 28662 Brake Pedal Effort Gauge.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Rotate each rear tire and wheel in order to inspect the brake shoe drag on the brake drum. Ensure that there is not brake drag. The brake shoes should not be contacting the brake drum.
  4. If the brake shoe drag on the brake drum is not correct, remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  5. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement.
  6. Inspect the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Inspection.
  7. Inspect the brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Inspection.
  8. Hold the bottom of the rearward brake shoe and move the top of the rearward brake shoe in the brake application direction.
  9. The adjuster actuator will rotate the star wheel on the adjuster. If the star wheel does not rotate remove the adjuster and repair or replace as necessary. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement.

  11. After brake shoe replacement adjust the brake shoes using the following procedure.
  12. 10.1. Measure the inside diameter of the brake drum (1) using the J 21177-A .
    10.2. Rotate the adjuster wheel and use the J 21177-A in order to adjust the brake shoe diameter to 1.27 mm (0.05 in) less than the drum inside diameter measurement.
  13. Install the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement.
  14. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Inspect the park brake lever travel. Refer to Park Brake Lever Adjustment in Park Brake.
  17. Test the braking system. Refer to Brake System Testing in Hydraulic Brakes.
