Important: Use the J 35616 Connector Test Adapter Kit whenever a diagnostic procedure requires testing or probing a terminal. Using the adapter will ensure that no damage to the terminal will occur, as well as giving an idea of whether contact tension is sufficient. If contact tension seems incorrect, refer to Checking Terminal Contact in General Electrical Diagnosis Procedures for specifics.

Use a DMM to check FUSE 39 for an open.

Did you find an open in FUSE 39?

Use a DMM to check circuit 39 for a short to ground and then replace FUSE 39.

Has the repair been made and the system rechecked?

--

System OK

  1. Disconnect the generator connector.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  3. Attach a scan tool to the DLC.
  4. Clear the DTCs.
  5. Select MISC Tests, ENG Outputs, and GEN L Terminal.
  6. Command the generator ON.
  7. Use a DMM to measure the voltage from the generator connector circuit 225 to ground.

Is the voltage displayed by the DMM near the specified value?

5 V

Go to Step 7

Use a DMM to check for a poor connection or open in circuit 225.

Did you find a poor connection or open in circuit 225?

Repair the poor connection or open in circuit 225.

Did you complete the repair and retest the system?

System OK

Service the PCM. Refer to Powertrain Control Module Replacement/Programming for 3100 (VIN M) or Powertrain Control Module Replacement/Programming for 3800 (VIN K).

Did you complete the repair and retest the system?

System OK

Use a DMM to measure the voltage from the generator BAT terminal to ground.

Does the DMM show battery voltage?

B+

Go to Step 9

Repair the open in circuit 2 to the generator battery terminal.

Did you complete the repair and retest the system?

System OK

  1. Reconnect the generator connector.
  2. Turn all accessories off.
  3. Run the engine at fast idle.
  4. Use a DMM to measure the voltage across the battery.

Is the reading within the specified range.

13-19 V

Replace the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement or Generator Replacement .
