Circuit/System Description

The steering wheel position sensor (SWPS) supplies 2 analog inputs, Phase A and Phase B, to the electronic brake control module (EBCM). The 2 input signals are approximately 90 degrees out of phase. By interpreting the relationship between the 2 inputs, the EBCM can determine the position of the steering wheel and the direction of the steering wheel rotation.

Conditions for Running the DTC

Ignition ON.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

    • Phase A and Phase B signal resistance values do not correlate to one another.
    • The calculated steering angle from the steering wheel position sensor does not correlate with the steering angle calculated from the yaw rate.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • The EBCM disables the 5-volt reference circuit, until the ignition is cycled.
    • The ABS and Stability Control indicator illuminates.
    • The EBCM disables the vehicle stability enhancement system (VSES) for the duration of the ignition cycle.
    • The driver information center (DIC) displays the Service Stability System message.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The condition for the DTC is no longer present.
    • The electronic brake control module (EBCM) clears the history DTC when a current DTC is not detected in 100 consecutive drive cycles.

Diagnostic Aids

    • During diagnosis, park the vehicle on a level surface.
    • The car should not pull in either direction while driving straight on a level surface.
    • The snapshot function on the scan tool can help find an intermittent DTC.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Position the steering wheel centered and the wheels facing straight-ahead.
  2. Engine running, observe the scan tool SWPS Signal A and SWPS Signal B parameters. Turning the steering wheel the readings should travel between 0 and 5 volts and their should be approximately a 2.5 volts difference between each signal.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the steering wheel position sensor.
  2. Test for less than 5 ohms between the low reference circuit terminal 2 and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
  4. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 volts between the 5-volt reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.
  5. If less than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
If greater than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
  6. Verify the scan tool SWPS Signal A and Signal B parameter is less than 0 volts.
  7. If greater than the specified range, test the appropriate signal circuit terminal for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
  8. Install a 3A fused jumper wire at the 5-volt reference circuit terminal 1. Toggle the jumper wire between the 5-volt reference circuit terminal 1 and the signal A circuit terminal 5 and signal B circuit terminal 6. Verify the scan tool SWPS Signal A and SWPS Signal B parameter is greater than 4.75-volts.
  9. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
  10. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the steering wheel position sensor.
