Power Steering Gear Inlet Pipe/Hose Replacement LY7

Special Tools

J 44586 Power Steering Gear Oil Seal Remover/Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove as much power steering fluid from the remote power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
  2. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
  3. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.

  5. Disconnect the power steering gear inlet hose from the power steering pump.
  6. Remove the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement.

  7. Object Number: 1812462  Size: SH
  8. Remove the power steering gear inlet hose bolt at the steering gear.
  9. Remove the power steering gear inlet hose from the vehicle.

  10. Object Number: 1492054  Size: SH

    Caution: Clean the power steering gear inlet and outlet ports thoroughly of any debris. Failure to do so could result in contamination and damage to the power steering system components.

  11. Install remover/installer J 44586 (2) to the steering gear oil seal (1).

  13. Extract the steering gear oil seal (1) from the steering gear using remover/installer J 44586 (2) with the aid of a flat-bladed tool (3) for additional leverage.

Installation Procedure

    Note: Start all of the nuts and bolts by hand before finalizing any of the torques.

  1. Install the NEW steering gear oil seal (1) to the steering gear using remover/installer J 44586 (2).

  2. Object Number: 1492058  Size: SH
  3. Ensure the steering gear oil seals (1) are fully seated in the steering gear.
  4. Caution: The inlet and outlet hoses must not be twisted during installation. Do not bend or distort the inlet or outlet hoses to make installation easier. Failure to follow these procedures could result in component damage.

  5. Position the power steering gear inlet hose in the vehicle.
  6. Install the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement.
  7. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  8. Install the power steering gear inlet hose and bolt at the steering gear and tighten the bolt to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  9. Object Number: 1812471  Size: SH
  10. Connect the power steering gear inlet hose to the power steering pump and tighten the fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).
  11. Clean any excess power steering fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  12. Install the right front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  13. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement.
  2. Remove the drive belt idler pulley. Refer to Drive Belt Idler Pulley Replacement.
  3. Hoist the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  4. Remove as much power steering fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
  5. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.

  7. Remove the 3 engine lift bracket bolts (1) and engine lift bracket (2).

  9. Remove the power steering hose bracket nut (2) and bracket (1).

  10. Object Number: 1775144  Size: SH
  11. Disconnect the power steering gear inlet hose from the power steering pump.
  12. Disconnect the power steering gear inlet pipe hose retainers.
  13. Remove the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement.

  14. Object Number: 1775307  Size: SH
  15. Remove the power steering gear inlet hose bolt (1) and disconnect the power steering gear inlet hose (2) from the steering gear.
  16. Remove the power steering gear inlet hose from the vehicle.

  17. Object Number: 1492054  Size: SH

    Caution: Clean the power steering gear inlet and outlet ports thoroughly of any debris. Failure to do so could result in contamination and damage to the power steering system components.

  18. Install the remover/installer J 44586 (2) to the steering gear oil seal (1).

  20. Extract the steering gear oil seal (1) from the steering gear using the remover/installer J 44586 (2) with the aid of a flat-bladed tool (3) for additional leverage.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1492057  Size: SH

  1. Install the NEW steering gear oil seal (1) to the steering gear using the remover/installer J 44586 (2).

  3. Ensure the steering gear oil seals (1) are fully seated in the steering gear.

  5. Install the power steering gear inlet hose to the vehicle.
  6. Install the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement.

    Object Number: 1775307  Size: SH
  8. Install the power steering gear inlet hose (2) to the steering gear and install the power steering gear inlet hose bolt (1). Prior to tightening the power steering gear inlet hose bolt (1), rotate the power steering gear outlet hose clockwise/downwards so it touches the power steering gear inlet hose (2). Verify the power steering hoses are still touching after the power steering gear inlet hose bolt is tight.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  10. Connect the power steering gear inlet pipe hose retainers.

  11. Object Number: 1775144  Size: SH
  12. Connect the power steering gear inlet hose to the power steering pump.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  14. Install the power steering hose bracket (1) and bracket nut (2).
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 5 N·m (45 lb in).

  16. Install the engine lift bracket (2) and bolts (1).
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  18. Clean any excess power steering fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  19. Install the drive belt idler pulley. Refer to Drive Belt Idler Pulley Replacement.
  20. Install the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement.
  21. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.
