Power Vacuum Brake Booster Replacement With RPO LAT

Warning: Refer to Brake Fluid Irritant Warning in the Preface section.

Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Caution in the Preface section.

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Always connect or disconnect the wiring harness connector from the EBCM/EBTCM with the ignition switch in the OFF position. Failure to observe this precaution could result in damage to the EBCM/EBTCM.

  1. Turn the ignition to the OFF position.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  3. Remove the left front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.

  5. Remove the 3 nuts that attach the electronic brake control module (EBCM)/brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV) bracket to the left front wheelhouse.
  6. Disconnect the power brake booster vacuum sensor electrical connector, if equipped.
  7. Disconnect the brake master cylinder pressure sensor electrical connector, if equipped.
  8. Lower the vehicle.

  10. Disconnect the electrical connector from the EBCM.
  11. Without disconnecting the hoses, position aside the radiator surge tank. Refer to Radiator Surge Tank Replacement.

  12. Object Number: 1222406  Size: SH
  13. Deplete the vacuum from the vacuum brake booster by removing the vacuum check valve (1) from the vacuum brake booster grommet (4). Do not disconnect the vacuum check valve from the vacuum brake hose (3).
  14. Note: Cap the brake pipe fittings to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  15. Remove the 4 brake pipes (2) from the BPMV.

  17. Remove the master cylinder nuts from the vacuum brake booster.

  19. Remove the EBCM/BPMV bracket assembly with the brake master cylinder.
  20. Remove the left side instrument panel insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Replacement - Left Side.
  21. Remove the electrical connector from the brake apply sensor.

  23. Remove the 2 brake pedal assembly to cowl mounting nuts.

  24. Object Number: 1301945  Size: SH
  25. Disconnect the brake pedal pushrod retaining clip (1) the wave washers (2) and the brake booster pushrod (3) from the brake pedal pin (4).
  26. Tilt the vacuum brake booster slightly in order to work the booster pushrod off the brake pedal pin. Do not apply excessive side pressure on the pushrod.

  27. Remove the booster from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the booster to the vehicle.
  2. Tilt the vacuum brake booster slightly in order to work the booster pushrod onto the brake pedal pin. Do not apply excessive side pressure on the pushrod. Align the pushrod with the pedal and assemble.
  3. Connect the brake pedal pushrod retaining clip (1) the wave washers (2) and the brake booster pushrod (3) to the brake pedal pin (4).
  4. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  5. Install the 2 brake pedal assembly to cowl mounting nuts and tighten to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
  6. Install the electrical connector to the brake apply sensor.
  7. Install the left side instrument panel insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Replacement - Left Side.

  8. Object Number: 1234784  Size: SH
  9. Install the EBCM/BPMV bracket assembly and the master cylinder to the vehicle.

  10. Object Number: 1219209  Size: SH

    Note: Ensure the gasket on the outside barrel of the master cylinder is positioned properly and is free of cuts and tears.

  11. Install the master cylinder nuts to the vacuum brake booster and tighten to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
  12. Raise the vehicle.

  14. Install the 3 nuts that attach the EBCM/BPMV bracket assembly to the left wheelhouse and tighten to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
  15. Connect the power brake booster vacuum sensor electrical connector, if equipped.
  16. Connect the brake master cylinder pressure sensor electrical connector, if equipped.
  17. Install the left front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  18. Lower the vehicle.

  20. Install the 4 brake pipes (2) to the BPMV and tighten to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  22. Connect the electrical connector to the EBCM.

  24. Connect the vacuum brake booster check valve (1) to the vacuum brake booster grommet (4).
  25. Position the radiator surge tank to the bracket. Refer to Radiator Surge Tank Replacement.
  26. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding.
  27. Calibrate the brake pedal position sensor. Refer to Brake Pedal Position Sensor Calibration.

Power Vacuum Brake Booster Replacement Without RPO LAT

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 1961215  Size: SH
  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Clean the brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV) pipe fitting areas of any accumulated dirt and foreign material.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the electronic brake control module (EBCM).
  4. Place a shop towel under the BPMV to catch any brake fluid loss.
  5. Disconnect the RF brake pipe fitting (1).
  6. Cap the brake pipe fitting and plug the BPMV outlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  7. Disconnect the LR brake pipe fitting (1).
  8. Cap the brake pipe fitting and plug the BPMV outlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  9. Disconnect the RR brake pipe fitting (1).
  10. Cap the brake pipe fitting and plug the BPMV outlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  11. Disconnect the LF brake pipe fitting (1).
  12. Cap the brake pipe fitting and plug the BPMV outlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  13. Deplete the vacuum reserve from the vacuum brake booster by removing the vacuum check valve (1) from the vacuum brake booster grommet.

  15. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  16. Remove the left front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  17. Remove the 3 BPMV bracket nuts (1).
  18. Lower the vehicle.

  20. Remove the master cylinder nuts (1).
  21. Remove the master cylinder and the EBCM/BPMV and bracket as an assembly from the vehicle.

  23. Remove the left side instrument panel insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Replacement - Left Side.
  24. Disconnect the brake pedal position sensor electrical connector.
  25. Remove the 2 brake pedal assembly nuts.

  27. Remove the brake pedal pushrod retainer clip (1).
  28. Remove the wave washers (2) and disconnect the brake pedal pushrod (3) from the pedal pivot pin (4).
  29. Tilt the vacuum brake booster upward slightly and remove the booster from the vehicle.
  30. Do not apply excessive side pressure on the pushrod.

Installation Procedure

  1. Maneuver the vacuum brake booster into position in the vehicle.
  2. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  3. Install the (2) brake pedal assembly nuts and tighten to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  4. Object Number: 1301945  Size: SH
  5. Install the wave washers (2) and connect the brake pedal pushrod (3) to the pedal pivot pin (4).
  6. Do not apply excessive side pressure on the pushrod.

  7. Install the brake pedal pushrod retainer clip (1).
  8. Connect the brake pedal position sensor electrical connector.
  9. Install the left side instrument panel insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Replacement - Left Side.

  10. Object Number: 1961282  Size: SH
  11. Inspect the seal on the master cylinder for damage and replace, if necessary.
  12. Ensure the seal is properly positioned on the body of the master cylinder.

  13. Install the master cylinder and the EBCM/BPMV and bracket assembly to the vehicle.
  14. Install the master cylinder nuts (1) and tighten to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  16. Raise and support the vehicle.
  17. Install the 3 BPMV bracket nuts (1) and tighten to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
  18. Install the left front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  19. Lower the vehicle.

  21. Install the vacuum check valve (1) to the vacuum brake booster grommet.
  22. If necessary, a small amount of denatured alcohol may be used as a lubricant for assembly. Do not use soap.

  23. Connect the LF brake pipe fitting (1) and tighten to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  25. Connect the RR brake pipe fitting (1) and tighten to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  26. Object Number: 1961220  Size: SH
  27. Connect the LR brake pipe fitting (1) and tighten to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  29. Connect the RF brake pipe fitting (1) and tighten to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).
  30. Note: Ensure the electrical connector is correctly inserted into the EBCM prior to placing the locking lever into position. Failure to make a proper connection may cause communication problems with the module.

  31. Connect the EBCM electrical connector.
  32. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding.
  33. Calibrate the brake pedal position sensor. Refer to Brake Pedal Position Sensor Calibration.
