The PASSENGER AIR BAG ON and OFF indicators are used to notify the driver when the passenger presence system (PPS) has enabled or disabled the instrument panel (I/P) inflator module. When the ignition is turned ON, the PPS module is supplied with voltage and commands both the PASSENGER AIR BAG ON and OFF indicators to illuminate for 5 seconds. During this illumination interval, the PPS module conducts a series of self tests. If no malfunctions are detected, the PPS module illuminates the PASSENGER AIR BAG ON or OFF indicator, depending on the determination of passenger seat occupant status. If a malfunction is detected, the PPS illuminates the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator and notifies the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). The SDM will illuminate the AIR BAG Indicator and Service Air Bag message to notify the driver of the PPS malfunction.

Important: The passenger air bag ON and OFF indicators may not operate as expected if there are supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) DTCs. Repair all SIR DTCs before proceeding with this diagnostic.

When the passenger seat is occupied and then unoccupied, the inflatable restraint passenger air bag ON and OFF indicators should switch states within 5 seconds.

Important: When removing connectors inspect for damage or corrosion. Damage or corrosion to the following components requires repair or replacement of the affected component/connector:

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the inflatable restraint instrument panel module indicator.
2. Test for less than 5.0 ohms between the ground circuit terminal 2 and ground

⇒	If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

3. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal 4 and ground.

⇒	If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal and the circuit fuse is open, test all components connected to the ignition voltage circuit and replace as necessary.

4. With the right front passenger seat occupied, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the control circuit terminal 1 and B+.

⇒	If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the PPS module.

5. With the right front passenger seat vacant, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the control circuit terminal 1 and B+.

⇒	If the test lamp illuminates, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the PPS module.

6. With the right front passenger seat vacant, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the control circuit terminal 3 and B+.

⇒	If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the PPS module.

7. With the right front passenger seat occupied, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the control circuit terminal 3 and B+.

⇒	If the test lamp illuminates, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the PPS module.

8. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the inflatable restraint instrument panel module indicator.

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the inflatable restraint instrument panel module indicator.
2. Install a 2A fused jumper wire between the ignition voltage circuit terminal 4 and B+. Momentarily install a jumper wire between the indictor control circuit terminal 1 and ground. Verify the ON indicator illuminates.

⇒	If the ON indicator does not illuminate, replace the inflatable restraint instrument panel module indicator.

3. With the 2A fused jumper wire still connected, momentarily install a jumper wire between the indicator control circuit terminal 3 and ground. Verify the OFF indicator illuminates.

⇒	If the OFF indicator does not illuminate, replace the inflatable restraint instrument panel module indicator.

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
