DEFINITION: The rear seat audio (RSA) control does not provide audio controls when using the headphones. The RSA control power button indicator does not illuminate.

Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check-Vehicle?

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Turn ON the radio.
  3. Install headphones to the RSA control.
  4. Press the power button on the RSA control.
  5. Operate all of the RSA control buttons.

Do all the RSA controls operate properly?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

Go to Step 3

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Remove the RSA control. Refer to Rear Seat Audio Control Replacement .
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Turn ON the radio.
  5. Measure the voltage from the 10-volt reference circuit of the RSA control to ground.

Does the voltage measure near the specified value?

9.5 V

Go to Step 4

Test the ground circuit of the RSA control for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and to Wiring Repairs .

Test the 10-volt reference circuit for an open or short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and to Wiring Repairs .

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Turn ON the radio.
  3. Measure the voltage from the remote radio control signal circuit of the RSA control to ground.
  4. Press the following RSA control buttons and record the voltage values:
  5. • Seek Up
    • Seek Down
    • AM/FM
    • Tape/CD
    • PSET
    • PWR

Do the voltage measure near the specified values?

2.5 V

2.0 V

4.0 V

3.5 V

3.0 V

4.5 V

Inspect for a poor connections at the harness connector of the radio. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and to Wiring Repairs .

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Remove the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement .
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Turn ON the radio.
  5. Measure the voltage from the remote radio control signal circuit of the radio to ground.
  6. Press the following RSA control buttons and record the voltage values:
  7. • Seek Up
    • Seek Down
    • AM/FM
    • Tape/CD
    • PSET
    • PWR

Does the voltage measure near the specified values?

2.5 V

2.0 V

4.0 V

3.5 V

3.0 V

4.5 V

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the RSA control. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and to Wiring Repairs .

  1. Replace the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement .
  2. Perform the VIN Relearn procedure with a scan tool. On the scan tool, go to Module Replacement/Setup in Vehicle Control Systems and select Radio.

Test the 10-volt reference circuit for an open, short to ground, or short to battery. Refer to Circuit Testing and to Wiring Repairs .

Replace the RSA control. Refer to Rear Seat Audio Control Replacement .

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
