Tools Required

    • J 6125-1B Slide Hammer
    • J 23129 Seal Removal Tool
    • J 38868 Shaft Removal Tool
    • J 41102-1A Axle Seal Installation Tool

Removal Procedure

Important: Do not damage the seal bore or the sleeve assembly. Fluid leaks may result.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the drive axle assembly. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.

  3. Object Number: 104554  Size: SH
  4. Remove the snap ring from the stub axle shaft. Discard the snap ring. Do not reuse.

  5. Object Number: 104556  Size: SH
  6. Remove the stub shaft from the transmission. Use the J 6125-1B and the J 38868 .
  7. Pull lightly on the shaft. Rotate the shaft until the output shaft snap ring at the differential seats in the taper on the differential side gear.
  8. Remove inner snap ring.
  9. Remove the right hand axle seal from the transmission. Use the J 23129 and the J 6125-1B .

Installation Procedure

Important

  1. The stub axle shaft sleeve and seal must be replaced together. DO NOT replace the sleeve or seal seperately.
  2. Install the new seal. Use the J 41102-1A . Lubricate the seal lip with a light wipe of transmission oil.

  3. Object Number: 104554  Size: SH

    Important: Carefully guide the axle shaft past the lip seal. Do not allow the shaft splines to contact any portion of the seal lip surface.

  4. Install the two new snap rings on the stub shaft.

  5. Object Number: 104558  Size: SH
  6. Install the stub shaft into the transmission. Use a mallet.
  7. Install the drive axle assembly. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Inspect the oil level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Check .
  10. Inspect the shaft and the seal for leaks.
