Diagnostic Instructions

    • Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
    • Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
    •  Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

Circuit/System Description

The radio or the chime module generates the audible warning through the left front speaker or an internal speaker, respectively. The radio or the chime module receives audible warning requests via serial data from the instrument panel cluster (IPC).

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, verify that the chime functions properly.
  2. If the chime is always on, refer to Chime Always On.
If the chime does not sound, refer to Chime Inoperative.

Circuit/System Testing

Chime Always On

  1. Ignition OFF, headlamp switch OFF, doors closed, key out of the ignition, disconnect the IPC. The chime should not sound.
  2. If the chime is still ON, replace the chime module. If equipped with a radio, replace the radio.
  3. Ignition OFF, driver door open, reconnect the IPC, disconnect the harness connector at the key in ignition switch. The chime should still sound.
  4. If the chime is OFF, replace the key in ignition switch.
  5. Ignition OFF, doors closed, reconnect the key in ignition switch, disconnect the harness connector at the passenger door ajar switch. The chime should still sound.
  6. If the chime is OFF, replace the passenger door ajar switch.
  7. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the driver door ajar switch. The chime should still sound.
  8. If the chime is OFF, replace the driver door ajar switch.
  9. Connect a test lamp between the door ajar switch signal circuit terminal B8 and battery voltage. The test lamp should not illuminate.
  10. If the test lamp illuminates, test the door ajar switch signal circuit for a short to ground.
  11. Connect a test lamp between the key in ignition switch signal circuit terminal B7 and battery voltage. The test lamp should not illuminate.
  12. If the test lamp illuminates, test the key in ignition switch signal circuit between the key in ignition switch and the IPC for a short to ground.
  13. Connect a test lamp between the driver door ajar switch terminal B and ground. The test lamp should not illuminate.
  14. If the test lamp illuminates, test the key in ignition switch signal circuit between the key in ignition switch and the driver door ajar switch for a short to ground.
  15. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the IPC.

Chime Inoperative

  1. Ignition ON, perform the chime test with the scan tool. The chime should sound.
  2. if equipped with a radio and the chime does not sound, adjust the radio balance and fade to the left front speaker. If the speaker does not operate properly, refer to Speaker Malfunction.
If equipped with a chime module and the chime does not sound, replace the chime module.
  3. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the passenger door ajar switch.
  4. Ignition OFF test for less than 1 ohm between the ground circuit terminal A and ground.
  5. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  6. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the driver door ajar switch.
  7. Ignition OFF test for less than 1 ohm between the ground circuit terminal D and ground.
  8. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  9. Install a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the door ajar switch signal circuit on the passenger door ajar switch terminal C and ground. The chime should sound.
  10. If the chime does not sound, test the signal circuit for the passenger door ajar switch for an open/high resistance.
If the chime does sound, replace the passenger door ajar switch.
  11. Install a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the door ajar switch signal circuit on the driver door ajar switch terminal C and ground. The chime should sound.
  12. If the chime does not sound, test the signal circuit for the driver door ajar switch for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the IPC.
If the chime does sound, replace the driver door ajar switch
  13. Install a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the key in ignition switch signal circuit terminal B and ground. The chime should sound.
  14. If the chime does not sound, test the signal circuit between the key in ignition switch and the driver door switch for an open/high resistance.
  15. Disconnect the key in ignition switch, install a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the key in ignition signal circuit terminal B3 and ground. The chime should sound.
  16. If the chime does not sound, test the signal circuit between the key in ignition circuit and the IPC for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the IPC.
  17. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the key in ignition switch.
