Cause

Correction

DEFINITION: A noise heard in the rear axle during all driving conditions. This noise may increase or decrease in volume based on different driving maneuvers and speeds.

A flat spot exists on the differential drive gear or the ring gear teeth.

Replace the differential drive pinion gear and the ring gear set.

    • For Dana® Model 286 axle, refer to Drive Pinion and Ring Gear Replacement .
    • For Spicer Eaton axles, call 1-800-TCM-HELP.
    • For Meritor axles, call 1-800-535-5560.

A flat spot exists on the bearing.

Replace the bearings.

    • For Dana® Model 286 axle, refer to Drive Pinion Bearings Replacement or Differential Side Bearings Replacement .
    • For Spicer Eaton axles, call 1-800-TCM-HELP.
    • For Meritor axles, call 1-800-535-5560.

The differential drive pinion gear splines are worn.

Replace the differential drive pinion gear and the ring gear set.

    • For Dana® Model 286 axle, refer to Drive Pinion and Ring Gear Replacement .
    • For Spicer Eaton axles, call 1-800-TCM-HELP.
    • For Meritor axles, call 1-800-535-5560.

The rear axle shaft bolt locator holes are worn.

Replace the rear axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft and/or Gasket Replacement .

The wheel hole studs are worn.

Replace the wheel hub studs.

The rear axle shaft is bent.

Replace the rear axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft and/or Gasket Replacement .
