Cause

Correction

DEFINITION: A noise heard during acceleration load.

The differential drive pinion to the ring rear backlash is excessive.

Adjust the differential drive pinion to the ring backlash.

    • For Dana® Model 286 axle, refer to Backlash Adjustment .
    • For Spicer Eaton axles, call 1-800-TCM-HELP.
    • For Meritor axles, call 1-800-535-5560.

The differential drive pinion and ring gear are worn.

Replace the differential drive pinion and the ring set.

    • For Dana® Model 286 axle, refer to Drive Pinion and Ring Gear Replacement .
    • For Spicer Eaton axles, call 1-800-TCM-HELP.
    • For Meritor axles, call 1-800-535-5560.

The drive pinion bearings are worn.

Replace the drive pinion bearings.

    • For Dana® Model 286 axle, refer to Drive Pinion Bearings Replacement .
    • For Spicer Eaton axles, call 1-800-TCM-HELP.
    • For Meritor axles, call 1-800-535-5560.

The drive pinion bearing preload may not be within specifications.

Adjust the drive pinion bearing preload.

    • For Spicer Eaton axles, call 1-800-TCM-HELP.
    • For Meritor axles, call 1-800-535-5560.

The drive pinion end play is excessive.

Adjust the drive pinion bearing preload.

    • For Meritor axles, call 1-800-535-5560.

The differential bearings are worn.

Replace the differential bearings.

    • For Meritor axles, call 1-800-535-5560.

The differential bearing preload may not be within specification.

Adjust the differential side bearing preload.

    • For Meritor axles, call 1-800-535-5560.

The rear axle lubricant is low.

Add lubricant to the rear axle. Refer to Rear Axle Lubricant Level Inspection .

The rear axle lubricant is incorrect.

Replace the rear axle lubricant with the proper lubricant. Refer to Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement .

The rear axle housing is bent.

Replace the rear axle housing. Refer to Rear Axle Housing Replacement .
