Removal Procedure

Note: Twist the spark plug boot one-half turn in order to release the boot. Pull on the spark plug boot only. Do not pull on the spark plug wire or the wire could be damaged.

  1. Remove the air cleaner layer. Refer to Air Cleaner Replacement.

  2. Object Number: 470704  Size: SH
  3. Remove the air conditioning (A/C) compressor. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement.
  4. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs and ignition coils.

  5. Object Number: 742260  Size: SH
  6. Disconnect the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer.
  7. Disconnect the ignition coil harness lead (4). Reposition the lead.
  8. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector (3). Reposition the connector.

  9. Object Number: 470897  Size: SH
  10. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  11. Remove the valve rocker arm cover.
  12. Note: The valve rocker arm cover gasket may be reused if not removed from the rocker arm cover.

  13. Inspect the valve rocker arm cover gasket for cuts or damage.
  14. Clean and inspect the valve rocker arm cover.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 470897  Size: SH
  1. Install a new valve rocker arm cover gasket if the gasket was removed from the rocker arm cover.
  2. Install the valve rocker arm cover.
  3. Install the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  4. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 677858  Size: SH
  5. Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolt in sequence using 2 passes.
  6. Tighten

    1. Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts to 6 N·m (53 lb in) a first pass.
    2. Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in) a final pass.

  7. Position and connect the ECT sensor electrical connector (3).
  8. Position and connect the ignition coil harness lead (4).
  9. Connect the CPA retainer.

  10. Object Number: 470704  Size: SH

    Note: Fully install the spark plug wire by pushing on the exposed end of the spark plug boot. Do not push the spark plug wire on to the spark plug by using the metal heat shield.

  11. Install the spark plug wires to the spark plugs and ignition coils.
  12. Install the A/C compressor. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement.
  13. Install the air cleaner layer. Refer to Air Cleaner Replacement.
