    • J 37096 Flywheel Holder
    •  J 38197-A Crankshaft Balancer Puller
    • J 45059 Torque Angle Meter

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Remove the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  5. Object Number: 317814  Size: SH
  6. Remove the right engine splash shield retainers and the engine splash shield.
  7. Remove the torque converter covers. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65E.

  8. Object Number: 309963  Size: SH
  9. Install the J 37096 to prevent the flywheel from turning.
  10. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt and discard the bolt.

  11. Object Number: 97728  Size: SH

    Important: Do not separate the crankshaft pulley from the crankshaft balancer. Service the crankshaft pulley and the crankshaft balancer as an assembly.

  12. Install the J 38197-A .
  13. Remove the crankshaft balancer.
  14. Remove the J 38197-A .

Installation Procedure

  1. Coat the engine front cover seal contact area on the crankshaft balancer, and the seal surface with engine oil.

  2. Object Number: 97730  Size: SH
  3. Install the crankshaft balancer.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Install the new crankshaft balancer bolt. Use theJ 45059 to prevent the flywheel from turning.
  6. Tighten

    1. Tighten the bolt to 150 N·m (111 lb ft).
    2. Use theJ 45059 to rotate the bolt an additional 76 degrees.
  7. Remove the J 45059 .
  8. Install the torque converter covers. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65E.

  10. Install the right engine splash shield and the engine splash shield retainers.
  11. Install the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  14. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  15. Perform the CKP system variation learn procedure. Refer to Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn in Engine Controls - 3.8L.
