Tools Required

    • J 8001 Dial Indicator Set
    • J 26900-13 Magnetic Indicator Base
  1. Clean the flywheel in solvent.
  2. Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution in the Preface section.

  3. Dry the flywheel with compressed air.
  4. Inspect the automatic transmission flywheel for the following:
  5. • Damaged ring gear teeth. Replace the flywheel if the ring gear is damaged, cracked or worn.
    • Stress cracks around the flywheel-to-crankshaft bolt hole locations.

       Important: Do not attempt to repair the welded areas that retain the ring gear to the flywheel plate. Install a new flywheel.

    • Welded areas that retain the ring gear onto the flywheel for cracking.

  6. Measure the flywheel face runout using a J 8001 with a J 26900-13 . Replace the flywheel if the runout exceeds 0.2 mm (0.0078 in).
