GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

Service of the powertrain control module (PCM) should normally consist of either replacement of the PCM or electrical erasable programmable read only memory (EEPROM) programming. If the diagnostic procedures call for PCM replacement, check the PCM first to see if the part is correct. If the PCM is faulty, remove the PCM and install the new service PCM.

The new service PCM will not be programmed. You must program the new PCM. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0602 indicates the EEPROM is not programmed or has malfunctioned.

Notice: Do not touch the connector pins or soldered components on the circuit board in order to prevent possible electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage to the PCM.

Notice: Turn the ignition OFF when installing or removing the PCM connectors and disconnecting or reconnecting the power to the PCM (battery cable, PCM pigtail, PCM fuse, jumper cables, etc.) in order to prevent internal PCM damage.

Removal Procedure

Important: It is necessary to record the remaining engine oil life. If the replacement module is not programed with the remaining engine oil life, the engine oil life will default to 100%. If the replacement module is not programmed with the remaining engine oil life, the engine oil will need to be changed at 5000 km (3,000 mi) from the last engine oil change.

  1. Using a scan tool, retrieve the percentage of remaining engine oil. Record the remaining engine oil life.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  3. Disconnect the IAT sensor electrical connector.
  4. Remove the 3 bolts from the inner fender brace and remove the brace.
  5. Loosen the clamp securing the air intake duct to the air cleaner housing.
  6. Carefully remove the air intake duct from the throttle body and air cleaner housing.

  7. Object Number: 444496 Size: SH
  8. Remove the 2 screws (2) from the 2 air cleaner housing sections.
  9. Remove the air cleaner housing cover assembly (1).
  10. Without disconnecting the PCM connectors, remove the PCM (4) and harness from the PCM housing.
  11. Disconnect the PCM connectors.

Installation Procedure

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Reconnect the PCM connectors.
  2. Tighten
Tighten the connectors to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  3. Carefully reinstall the PCM and harness into the PCM housing.

  4. Object Number: 444496 Size: SH
  5. Reinstall the air cleaner housing cover assembly (1).
  6. Reinstall the 2 screws from the 2 air cleaner housing sections.
  7. Carefully reinstall the air intake duct to the throttle body and air cleaner housing.
  8. Install the clamp securing the air intake duct to the air cleaner housing.
  9. Tighten
Tighten the clamp to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  10. Install the IAT sensor electrical connector.
  11. Position the inner fender brace and reinstall the 3 bolts.
  12. Connect the negative battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  13. The replacement PCM will NOT allow secondary AIR pump operation until a total of 16 km (10 miles) have been accumulated.
  14. The new PCM must be programmed. Refer to Powertrain Control Module Programming .
