Notice: In order to prevent possible Electrostatic Discharge damage to the PCM, Do Not touch the connector pins or the soldered components on the circuit board.

Service of the PCM should normally consist of either replacement of the PCM or EEPROM programming. If the diagnostic procedures call for the PCM to be replaced, the PCM should be inspected first to see if it is the correct part. If it is, remove the faulty PCM and install the new service PCM.

Notice: Turn the ignition OFF when installing or removing the PCM connectors and disconnecting or reconnecting the power to the PCM (battery cable, PCM pigtail, PCM fuse, jumper cables, etc.) in order to prevent internal PCM damage.

Important:  When replacing the production PCM with a service PCM, it is important to transfer the broadcast code and production PCM number to the service PCM label. Do not record on PCM cover. This will allow positive identification of PCM parts throughout the service life of the vehicle.

The service EEPROM will not be programmed. DTC P0602 indicates the EEPROM is not programmed or has malfunctioned.

Removal Procedure

    Important: It is necessary to record the remaining engine oil life. If the replacement module is not programed with the remaining engine oil life, the engine oil life will default to 100%. If the replacement module is not programmed with the remaining engine oil life, the engine oil will need to be changed at 5000 km (3,000 mi) from the last engine oil change.

  1. Using a scan tool, retrieve the percentage of remaining engine oil. Record the remaining engine oil life.
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  4. Disconnect the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor.
  5. Remove the 3 bolts from the inner fender brace and remove the brace.
  6. Loosen the clamps securing the air intake duct and the MAF sensor to the throttle body and air cleaner housing.
  7. Carefully remove the air intake duct and MAF sensor from the throttle body and air cleaner housing (1).

  9. Remove the 2 screws (2) from the 2 air cleaner housing sections.
  10. Remove the air cleaner housing cover.
  11. Without disconnecting the PCM connectors, remove the PCM (4) and the harness from the PCM housing (3).
  12. Disconnect the PCM connectors.

Installation Procedure

  1. Connect the PCM connectors.
  2. Carefully install the PCM (4) and harness into the PCM housing (3).

  4. Install the air cleaner housing cover assembly (1).
  5. Install the screws to the 2 air cleaner housing sections.
  6. Carefully install the air intake duct to the throttle body and air cleaner housing.
  7. Tighten the clamp securing the air intake duct to the air cleaner housing.
  8. Position the inner fender brace and install the 3 bolts.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10. If a replacement PCM is being installed, program the PCM.
  11. The replacement PCM will NOT allow secondary AIR pump operation until a total of 10 miles have accumulated.

  12. If a replacement PCM is installed, perform the Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn .

EEPROM Programming

  1. Ensure the ignition is ON.
  2. If the PCM fails to program, inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version.
  3. Attempt to program the PCM. If the PCM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the PCM. The replacement PCM must be programmed.

Functional Check

  1. Perform Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check .
  2. Start the engine and let the engine run for 1 minute.
  3. Use the scan tool in order to scan for DTCs.
