Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 36850 Transjel Lubricant

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the air cleaner intake duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.8L.
  3. Remove the accelerator cable bracket with the accelerator and cruise control cables. Refer to Accelerator Control Cable Bracket Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L or Accelerator Control Cable Bracket Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.8L.

  4. Object Number: 629690  Size: SH
  5. Remove the transaxle shift cable from the shift lever.
  6. Remove the transaxle shift cable bracket bolts and the bracket from the transaxle.
  7. Disconnect the transaxle wiring harness connector.

  8. Object Number: 164786  Size: SH
  9. Remove the top four case side cover bolts (56,58).
  10. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture in Engine Mechanical - 3.4L or Engine Support Fixture in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L.
  11. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  12. Remove the frame assembly. Refer to Frame Removal in Frame and Underbody.
  13. Remove the left drive axle from the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  14. Secure the drive axle to the strut assembly.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Using the engine support fixture lower the engine assembly to access the transaxle case side cover.
  17. Raise the vehicle.

  19. Remove the transaxle mount bracket bolts and the bracket from the transaxle.
  20. Position the drain pan under the transaxle.

  21. Object Number: 164786  Size: SH
  22. Remove the remaining case side cover bolts (56,57,58).

  23. Object Number: 48208  Size: SH
  24. Remove the case side cover (53).
  25. Remove the case side cover gasket (54).
  26. Remove the case side cover O-ring (59).
  27. Clean the side cover gasket mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 48208  Size: SH
  1. Install the J 36850 Transjel Lubricant to the case side cover O-ring (59).
  2. Install the O-ring (59) to the case side cover.
  3. Install the case side cover gasket (54).
  4. Install the case side cover (53).

  5. Object Number: 164786  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the case side cover bolts (56,57,58).
  7. Tighten
    Tighten bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  8. Remove the drain pan from under the transaxle.

  10. Install the transaxle mount bracket
  11. Install the transaxle mount bracket bolts.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 95 N·m (70 lb ft)

  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Using the engine support fixture raise the engine assembly to the original position.
  15. Raise the vehicle.
  16. Install the left drive axle to the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  17. Install the frame assembly. Refer to Frame Removal in Frame and Underbody.
  18. Lower the vehicle.
  19. Remove the engine support fixture.

  20. Object Number: 164786  Size: SH
  21. Install the top four case side cover bolts.
  22. Tighten
    Tighten bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  23. Connect the transaxle wiring harness connector.
  24. Install the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.4L or Engine Mount Strut Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L.

  26. Install the transaxle shift cable bracket.
  27. Install the transaxle shift cable bracket bolts.
  28. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  29. Install the transaxle shift cable to the shift lever.
  30. Install the accelerator cable bracket with the accelerator and cruise control cables. Refer to Accelerator Control Cable Bracket Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L or Accelerator Control Cable Bracket Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.8L.
  31. Install the air cleaner intake duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.8L.
  32. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  33. Notice: Do not overfill the transmission. Overfilling will result in foaming, loss of fluid, and possible damage to the transmission.

  34. Check and fill the transaxle as necessary.
  35. Inspect for fluid leaks.
